How to Replace Rear Turn Signal Bulbs on a 2018 Nissan Frontier
Step-by-step tail lamp removal, bulb swap tips, required tools/parts, and testing checklist

🔧 Frontier - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
You’ll remove the rear tail lamp housing, twist out the turn-signal bulb socket, and swap the bulb. This is a simple job, but the lamp has alignment pins that can break if you pry the wrong way.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the lights OFF and remove the key before starting.
- ⚠️ Let the bulbs cool; they can get hot.
- ⚠️ Don’t touch the new bulb glass with bare fingers; oils can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ Pull the lamp straight back—don’t pry sideways on the painted body.
- 🔋 Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.
🔧 Required Tools

- 🚪 Open the tailgate so you can access the tail lamp screws.
- 🧤 Put on nitrile gloves so you don’t touch the bulb glass.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Access the tail lamp fasteners
- Open the tailgate and locate the two Phillips screws on the inside edge of the tail lamp.
- Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove both screws.
Step 2: Remove the tail lamp housing
- Grip the lamp housing with both hands.
- Pull the lamp straight back to release the alignment pins (no twisting).
- If it’s stuck, use a plastic trim removal tool (a plastic wedge used to separate panels without scratching paint) and gently help it pop free from the rear edge.
Step 3: Remove the rear turn signal bulb socket
- Identify the turn signal socket on the back of the lamp (the one that matches the turn-signal position in the lens).
- Use your hand to rotate the socket counterclockwise about 1/4 turn, then pull it out.
- Use a small flashlight if you need help seeing the socket orientation.
Step 4: Replace the bulb
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket by hand.
- Install the new bulb by pressing it straight in until fully seated.
- Apply a thin wipe of dielectric grease to the socket seal (not on the bulb glass). Keeps water out and prevents corrosion.
Step 5: Reinstall the socket and test
- Insert the socket back into the lamp and rotate clockwise to lock it.
- Before reinstalling the lamp, turn the hazards ON to confirm the bulb flashes.
- If it doesn’t light, turn hazards OFF and re-seat the bulb and socket.
Step 6: Reinstall the tail lamp housing
- Align the lamp’s pins with the body grommets, then push the lamp straight in until it seats flush.
- Install the two screws using a Phillips #2 screwdriver and tighten snug (do not overtighten; the lamp can crack).
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Test left and right turn signals, hazards, brake lights, and reverse lights.
- 🔎 Make sure the lamp sits flush and doesn’t wiggle.
- 💡 If the flash is fast, one side may still have a bulb out.
