🔧 Sorento - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

Your Sorento’s rear turn signal bulbs sit behind the rear tail lamp area. The job is usually done from inside the cargo area by removing a small access cover, twisting the bulb socket out, and swapping the bulb.

If your Sorento has LED rear turn signals (no replaceable bulb), the fix is replacing the lamp assembly instead—tell me and I’ll switch you to that procedure.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.7 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and the light switch OFF before starting.
  • ⚠️ Let the tail lamps cool if they were on (bulbs get hot).
  • ⚠️ Don’t touch the new bulb’s glass with bare fingers (skin oils can shorten bulb life).
  • ⚠️ Support interior trim panels so you don’t crack clips.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Plastic trim removal tool set
  • Flashlight
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • 6" extension for ratchet

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear turn signal bulb (amber, correct fitment for Sorento) - Qty: 2
  • Dielectric grease (optional) - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Open the liftgate and clear the rear cargo area for room to work.
  • Have a flashlight ready—access is easiest when you can see the socket clearly.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm you have a bulb-type turn signal

  • Turn the hazard lights ON and walk behind your Sorento.
  • If you see a normal blinking bulb (amber or red), continue below.
  • If it’s an LED pattern and there’s no “single bulb” look, reply “LED rear turn signals” and I’ll give you the lamp replacement steps.

Step 2: Open the interior access cover (cargo area)

  • Use a flashlight to locate the rear lamp access door/cover behind the side trim in the cargo area (left side for left signal, right side for right signal).
  • Use a plastic trim removal tool set to pop the access cover open.
  • Go slow—clips release with steady pressure.

Step 3: Remove the turn signal bulb socket

  • Reach in and find the turn signal bulb socket on the back of the tail lamp (it’s the socket that corresponds to the blinking light).
  • Twist the socket counterclockwise about 1/4 turn by hand and pull it straight out.
  • If it’s tight, use nitrile gloves for grip (don’t use pliers—plastic can crack).

Step 4: Replace the bulb

  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket by hand.
  • Install the new rear turn signal bulb (amber) by pushing it straight in until fully seated.
  • If you have it, apply a tiny smear of dielectric grease (optional) to the socket seal (not on the bulb glass).

Step 5: Reinstall the socket and test

  • Insert the socket back into the tail lamp, then twist clockwise to lock.
  • Turn the hazards ON and confirm the new bulb blinks normally.
  • If it blinks fast, the bulb may be the wrong type or not seated fully—remove and reinstall.

Step 6: Reinstall the access cover

  • Snap the access cover back into place by hand.
  • Use a plastic trim removal tool set to align clips if needed (don’t force it).

Step 7 (If you can’t reach the socket): Remove the tail lamp to access the socket

  • Remove the interior access cover again using a plastic trim removal tool set.
  • Use a 10mm socket, 6" extension for ratchet, and 1/4" drive ratchet to remove the tail lamp retaining nuts you can reach.
  • Use a Phillips screwdriver if your access panel has screws.
  • Carefully pull the tail lamp straight rearward to release the alignment pins, then remove the turn signal socket and replace the bulb as in Steps 3–5.
  • Reinstall the lamp and tighten the nuts evenly (snug only—do not overtighten plastic studs).

âś… After Repair

  • Verify left and right turn signals, hazards, and brake lights all operate normally.
  • Take a quick walk-around at night to confirm brightness matches side-to-side.
  • Make sure the access covers are fully clipped in so cargo trim doesn’t rattle.
