🔧 Elantra - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

Your Elantra’s rear turn signal bulbs are in the tail lamp housings at the back of the car. On most Value Edition cars, you can replace the bulb from inside the trunk by twisting the bulb socket out, swapping the bulb, and testing the signals.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.8 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Let the bulbs cool first; they can get hot.
  • ⚠️ Turn ignition OFF and remove the key/fob from the car.
  • ⚠️ Do not touch the new bulb glass with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life.
  • ⚠️ Support the trunk trim panels so clips don’t snap.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" ratchet
  • 3" extension for 1/4" ratchet
  • Phillips #2 screwdriver
  • Plastic trim removal tool
  • Flashlight
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear turn signal bulb (amber, single-filament) - Qty: 2

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the trunk and remove any cargo so you can work.
  • Tip: A trim removal tool is a plastic pry tool that helps pop clips without damage.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm you’re replacing the correct bulb

  • Turn the ignition to ON (engine not needed).
  • Turn on the left/right turn signal and confirm which side is out.
  • Turn ignition OFF again before working.

Step 2: Access the tail lamp bulb socket from the trunk

  • Use a flashlight to find the rear of the tail lamp inside the trunk.
  • Remove the trunk side access cover/liner near the tail lamp using a plastic trim removal tool.
  • If there are plastic push-clips, gently pry the center pin out with the trim removal tool, then pull the clip out.

Step 3: Remove the rear turn signal bulb socket

  • Locate the bulb socket for the turn signal (typically the amber bulb position).
  • Grip the socket and rotate it counterclockwise about 1/4 turn, then pull it straight out.
  • If it’s tight, wiggle gently—don’t yank.

Step 4: Replace the bulb

  • Wear nitrile gloves.
  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket (single-filament wedge/push type for this position).
  • Push the new rear turn signal bulb (amber, single-filament) straight into the socket until fully seated.

Step 5: Reinstall the socket and test

  • Insert the socket back into the tail lamp housing.
  • Rotate clockwise to lock it in place.
  • Turn ignition ON and test: left signal, right signal, and hazards.

Step 6: Reinstall trunk trim

  • Reinstall the access cover/liner.
  • Reinstall any push-clips by pushing the clip body in first, then press the center pin in using a Phillips #2 screwdriver handle or your thumb.

Step 7 (If your turn signal is not a twist-out socket): Remove the tail lamp assembly

  • If you don’t see a twist-out socket, remove the tail lamp to reach the bulb carrier.
  • Remove the inner trim more fully as needed using a plastic trim removal tool.
  • Remove tail lamp retaining nuts using a 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 3" extension.
  • Pull the tail lamp straight rearward to release the locating pins (do not pry against painted body).
  • Disconnect the connector, access the bulb holder, replace the bulb, then reinstall.
  • When tightening the lamp nuts: Torque to 7–9 Nm (62–80 in-lbs).

âś… After Repair

  • Verify both rear turn signals flash at a normal rate (not “fast flash”).
  • Check hazards and brake lights to ensure you didn’t disturb another socket.
  • Make sure the trunk liner is clipped back securely so it won’t rattle.
