Step-by-step tail lamp removal, bulb vs LED identification, tools, parts, and torque specs

🔧 Odyssey - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
On your Odyssey, the rear turn signal can be either a replaceable bulb or an LED built into the tail lamp (not a bulb). The steps below walk you through removing the rear outer tail lamp, checking which type you have, and replacing the bulb if equipped.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Ignition OFF before starting; keep the key/fob away.
- ⚠️ Let the lamps cool; bulbs and housings can be hot.
- ⚠️ Wear nitrile gloves; don’t touch bulb glass with bare fingers.
- ⚠️ Support the tail lamp while removing it to prevent cracking paint or lens.
- 🔋 Battery disconnect is not required.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Phillips #2 screwdriver
- 10mm socket
- 1/4" drive ratchet
- Trim removal tool (plastic)
- Work light
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Rear turn signal bulb (amber, typically 7440/7440A) - Qty: 2 Replace in pairs
- Outer rear tail lamp assembly - Qty: 1 Only if your turn signal is LED/non-serviceable
📋 Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- 🚪 Open the liftgate for access to the tail lamp fasteners.
- 💡 Have a helper ready to press the turn signal stalk later for testing (optional).
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Verify the turn signal section
- Turn the hazard lights ON for 5 seconds, then OFF (no tools).
- Watch which part of the rear lamp flashes on the side you’re replacing.
- This prevents changing the wrong bulb.
Step 2: Remove the outer tail lamp fasteners
- With the liftgate open, locate the screws along the inner edge of the outer tail lamp (near the liftgate opening).
- Remove the screws using a Phillips #2 screwdriver.
- If your lamp uses nuts instead of screws on your build, remove them using a 10mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet.
Step 3: Pull the tail lamp straight back to release the locating pins
- Use a trim removal tool (plastic) to gently start the lamp moving (do not pry on the painted bumper edge).
- Pull the lamp straight rearward with even pressure to release the guide pins/clips.
- Wiggle gently—don’t twist the lamp.
Step 4: Disconnect the wiring
- Support the lamp with one hand.
- Press the connector lock tab and unplug it by hand (no tools).
- Set the lamp on a soft towel (no tools).
Step 5: Identify the turn signal socket (bulb-type vs LED-type)
- Look on the back of the lamp for a round socket that can be removed by twisting.
- If you see a twist-out socket, it’s a replaceable bulb setup.
- If you do NOT see a twist-out socket and the back looks sealed with electronics, the turn signal is LED and the entire outer rear tail lamp assembly must be replaced.
Step 6A: If equipped with a bulb — remove the socket and replace the bulb
- Twist the turn signal socket counterclockwise by hand to remove it (no tools).
- Pull the old bulb straight out (wear nitrile gloves).
- Push the new rear turn signal bulb (amber, typically 7440/7440A) straight into the socket until fully seated.
- Reinstall the socket and twist clockwise until it locks (no tools).
Step 6B: If LED/non-serviceable — replace the lamp assembly
- Move any missing clips/grommets from the old lamp to the new lamp using a trim removal tool (plastic).
- Plug the connector into the new lamp until it clicks (no tools).
Step 7: Reinstall the tail lamp
- Align the guide pins and press the lamp straight forward until fully seated (no tools).
- Reinstall the screws using a Phillips #2 screwdriver.
- If your build uses nuts, install them using a 10mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet and Torque to 9 N·m (80 in-lbs).
Step 8: Repeat on the other side (recommended)
- Replace the other side bulb too for matching color/brightness (use the same tools).
✅ After Repair
- Test left turn, right turn, and hazards. Confirm normal flash speed.
- Confirm the tail lamp is flush with the body and doesn’t rattle.
- If the turn signal flashes fast, recheck bulb seating and connector fit.
