šŸ”§ Sierra 1500 - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

On your Sierra 1500, the rear turn signal bulb is accessed by removing the tail lamp assembly from the outside of the truck bed. Once the lamp is out, you twist the bulb socket out, swap the bulb, and reinstall everything.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • āš ļø Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key before unplugging any lamp connectors.
  • āš ļø Wear gloves—bulbs and sharp edges behind the lamp can cut hands.
  • āš ļø If your Sierra has factory LED rear lamps, there may be no replaceable bulb (the whole tail lamp assembly is replaced instead).

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Torx T15 screwdriver
  • Plastic trim tool (non-marring)
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Small flashlight

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear turn signal bulb (amber) - Qty: 2 Replace in pairs
  • Dielectric grease (optional) - Qty: 1

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park your Sierra 1500 on a flat surface and set the parking brake.
  • Lower the tailgate so you can access the tail lamp screws.
  • No battery disconnect is required for a simple bulb swap.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm which side and which bulb

  • Turn the hazard lights ON briefly, then OFF, to confirm which rear side is out.
  • Use a small flashlight to look at the rear lamp and note which section flashes (this helps you choose the correct socket later).

Step 2: Remove the tail lamp screws

  • Open/lower the tailgate.
  • Use a Torx T15 screwdriver to remove the two screws on the inboard edge of the tail lamp (the edge closest to the tailgate opening).
  • Set the screws somewhere safe so they don’t fall into the bumper area.
  • Torque to 2 Nm (18 in-lbs) when reinstalling.

Step 3: Pull the tail lamp assembly straight back

  • Hold the lamp with both hands and pull it straight rearward (toward you).
  • If it feels stuck, use a plastic trim tool (non-marring) to gently help start it moving. Pull straight back, not sideways.

Step 4: Remove the turn signal bulb socket

  • Locate the socket for the turn signal (the one that matches the section you saw flashing).
  • Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand and pull it out of the lamp housing.
  • If your hands slip, use nitrile gloves for better grip.

Step 5: Replace the bulb

  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket (no twisting on most wedge-style bulbs).
  • Push the new bulb straight into the socket until fully seated.
  • If you’re using it, apply a tiny amount of dielectric grease to the socket seal (not on the bulb glass). Dielectric grease helps prevent corrosion and moisture.

Step 6: Reinstall the socket and test

  • Insert the socket back into the lamp housing and twist clockwise until it locks.
  • Before reinstalling the lamp, turn the hazards ON to confirm the new bulb flashes correctly.
  • If it doesn’t work, remove the socket and re-seat the bulb fully.

Step 7: Reinstall the tail lamp assembly

  • Line up the lamp’s alignment pins with the body grommets and push the lamp straight in.
  • Install the two screws using a Torx T15 screwdriver.
  • Torque to 2 Nm (18 in-lbs).

āœ… After Repair

  • Test left turn, right turn, hazards, brake lights, and reverse lights.
  • If the turn signal flashes fast, one bulb may still be out on that side (front or rear).
  • If you have factory LED tail lamps and the signal is out, the fix may require replacing the tail lamp assembly.
