🔧 Camaro - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

Your Camaro’s rear turn signals are serviced from inside the trunk by removing a small trim/access cover and twisting the bulb socket out of the tail lamp. The key is to match the replacement bulb exactly to the old one (same base and wattage) so it clicks in and works correctly.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.8 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🧤 Let the tail lamp cool before touching the bulb/socket.
  • 🔋 If you’re worried about shorts, disconnect the negative battery cable (optional for this job).
  • 🧼 Don’t touch the new bulb’s glass with bare fingers; oils can shorten bulb life.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Small flathead screwdriver
  • Flashlight
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear turn signal bulb (match old bulb) - Qty: 1
  • Rear turn signal bulbs (replace both sides in pairs) - Qty: 2

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, put the transmission in gear, and set the parking brake.
  • Open the trunk and clear out cargo so you can reach the rear corners easily.
  • If you choose to disconnect the battery: loosen the negative terminal using the correct wrench for your battery clamp, then isolate the cable so it can’t spring back.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Access the tail lamp socket from the trunk

  • Use a flashlight to find the rear corner trim/access cover behind the tail lamp.
  • Use a trim clip removal tool to pop out any push-clips holding the trunk liner near the tail lamp.
  • If an access door is tight, gently pry it with a small flathead screwdriver.

Step 2: Identify the turn signal socket

  • Look for the bulb socket that lines up with the amber turn-signal section of the tail lamp (or the area that flashes).
  • Tip: Have a helper signal to confirm.

Step 3: Remove the bulb socket

  • Grip the socket and rotate it counterclockwise about a quarter turn to unlock it (by hand).
  • Pull the socket straight out of the tail lamp.

Step 4: Remove the old bulb

  • Put on nitrile gloves.
  • Pull the bulb straight out of the socket (most rear turn bulbs are push-in style).
  • Take the old bulb with you to match the replacement exactly (same base shape and pin layout).

Step 5: Install the new bulb

  • Push the new bulb into the socket until it seats fully.
  • If the bulb has exposed glass, handle it with nitrile gloves to avoid skin oils.

Step 6: Reinstall the socket and trunk trim

  • Insert the socket back into the tail lamp, then twist clockwise to lock.
  • Reinstall the access cover and any trunk liner clips by hand (use the trim clip removal tool to align clips if needed).

Step 7: Verify operation

  • Turn the ignition on and test the turn signal and hazard flashers.
  • If it doesn’t flash, remove the socket again and confirm the bulb is fully seated and the socket is fully locked.

âś… After Repair

  • Confirm the repaired side flashes at a normal speed and matches the other side.
  • Check brake lights and tail lights while you’re there (sometimes multiple functions share the housing).
  • If you disconnected the battery, reconnect it and make sure the trunk light and radio work normally.
