How to Replace Rear Turn Signal Bulbs on a 2017 Toyota RAV4
Step-by-step DIY guide with tools, parts, safety tips, and torque specs for rear turn signal bulb replacement

🔧 RAV4 - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
You’ll be replacing the rear turn signal bulbs in the tail light housings on your RAV4. The bulbs are accessed from inside the cargo area by removing a small trim cover and twisting the bulb socket out.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Make sure the ignition is OFF and the key is removed so the lights cannot power on while you work.
- ⚠️ Allow the bulbs to cool before touching them; recently used bulbs can be hot.
- ⚠️ Set the parking brake and keep the transmission in Park so the vehicle cannot roll.
- ⚠️ Do not touch the glass of new bulbs with bare fingers; oil can shorten bulb life.

📋 Before You Begin
- 📝 Park your RAV4 on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- 📝 Turn the headlight/turn signal switch OFF and remove the key, or switch the engine OFF if you have push-button start.
- 📝 Open the rear liftgate fully so you can reach the interior trim on both sides.
- 📝 Clear out the cargo area so you can easily reach the side panels.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Locate the rear turn signal access covers
- Open the liftgate and stand behind your RAV4, looking into the cargo area.
- On the left interior side panel, find the small rectangular plastic access cover directly behind the tail light assembly.
- Do the same on the right side; you will have one cover on each side.
- These covers allow access to the bulb sockets without removing the whole lamp.
Step 2: Remove the interior trim access cover
- Put on your work gloves and safety glasses.
- Use the trim removal tool (plastic) or the tip of a small flathead screwdriver wrapped in a shop towel to gently pry up one edge of the access cover.
- Carefully work around the edge until the cover pops out. Do not force it; it should release with gentle prying.
- Set the cover aside where it won’t get lost.
Step 3: Identify the turn signal bulb socket
- Shine your flashlight into the opening.
- You will see multiple bulb sockets in the tail light housing. The rear turn signal socket on the RAV4 is usually the lower outer socket and has an amber bulb (7440 amber).
- If you are unsure, you can briefly have a helper turn the ignition ON and activate the left or right turn signal while you look from outside to see which section of the lamp flashes, then match it to the socket you see inside. Turn ignition OFF afterward.
Step 4: Remove the bulb socket from the tail light
- Reach into the opening and grip the correct socket firmly.
- Turn the socket about a quarter turn counterclockwise (lefty-loosey) by hand. If it is tight, you can use a shop towel around your fingers for better grip.
- Pull the socket straight back out of the tail light housing once it has turned and unlocked.
Step 5: Remove the old bulb
- Hold the socket with one hand and gently pull the old bulb straight out with the other hand.
- If the bulb is stuck, wiggle it slightly while pulling, but do not twist hard.
- Inspect the socket contacts for corrosion or burning. If they are dirty, lightly wipe with a shop towel.
Step 6: Install the new bulb
- Open the package for the new rear turn signal bulb (7440 amber).
- Avoid touching the glass part with bare fingers; use work gloves or hold it with a shop towel.
- If you have dielectric grease, put a very small dab on the metal contacts of the socket (not on the glass).
- Push the new bulb straight into the socket until it is firmly seated.
- If it feels loose, remove and reinsert until snug.
Step 7: Reinstall the socket into the tail light
- Align the tabs on the bulb socket with the matching slots in the tail light housing.
- Insert the socket into the hole and press it in fully.
- Turn the socket a quarter turn clockwise (righty-tighty) by hand until it stops. It should feel secure and not wobble.
Step 8: Test the new bulb
- With the socket installed and still leaving the access cover off, close the liftgate gently or hold it mostly closed if needed for visibility.
- Turn the ignition to ON (engine can stay off) and activate the left or right turn signal that you just replaced.
- Walk behind your RAV4 and confirm the turn signal flashes brightly and at a normal speed.
- If it does not come on or flashes very quickly, turn ignition OFF and recheck that the bulb is fully seated and the socket is fully locked into the housing.
Step 9: Reinstall the interior access cover
- Turn the ignition OFF after testing.
- Align the plastic access cover with the opening in the interior side panel.
- Press it firmly until all clips snap back into place. You may need to press on each corner.
- Make sure the cover sits flush with the panel and does not rattle.
Step 10: Repeat on the other side
- Repeat Steps 2–9 for the other side rear turn signal so both sides have new bulbs.
- Replacing both sides together keeps brightness and color even.
Optional Step 11: If socket is damaged or loose (lamp removal)
- If you find the socket is cracked or will not lock, you may need to remove the entire tail light assembly.
- From inside the cargo area, remove the access cover as before and use a 10mm socket with a 1/4" ratchet and short extension to remove the two 10mm nuts holding the tail light to the body.
- From outside, gently pull the tail light straight back (not sideways) to release the locating pins.
- Once free, you can more easily access and replace the socket, then reinstall the tail light and tighten the nuts to 7 Nm (62 in-lbs) using the 10mm socket.
- Recheck bulb operation after reassembly.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Turn the ignition ON and test both left and right rear turn signals.
- ✅ Test hazard lights to confirm both rear signals flash correctly.
- ✅ Check around the tail light area from outside to make sure the housings are seated properly and there are no gaps.
- ✅ Put cargo items back in the trunk area, making sure nothing presses on the trim panels.
