🔧 Highlander - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
Replacing the rear turn signal bulbs on your Highlander is a beginner-friendly job. The rear turn signal bulb sits inside the outer rear lamp assembly, so you’ll remove the lamp from the body, twist out the bulb socket, and install a new amber bulb.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 20-40 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and keep the key fob away from the vehicle so the hybrid system cannot power on accidentally.
- ⚠️ Do not touch the new glass bulb with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ Use light pressure when removing the rear lamp assembly. The plastic guide pins can crack if pried sideways.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this bulb replacement.

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

📋 Before You Begin
- Park your Highlander on level ground.
- Shift to Park and set the parking brake.
- Turn all lights OFF.
- Open the rear liftgate.
- A plastic trim removal tool is a non-metal pry tool that helps lift covers without scratching paint or trim.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the liftgate and locate the lamp fasteners
- Stand at the rear of your Highlander and open the liftgate fully.
- Look at the inside edge of the rear lamp assembly on the body side.
- Use the plastic trim removal tool to gently pop off the small fastener covers if equipped.
Step 2: Remove the rear lamp mounting bolts
- Use a 10mm socket and 1/4-inch ratchet to remove the rear lamp mounting bolts.
- Set the bolts somewhere safe so they do not fall into the bumper area.
- Tip: A small cup works great.
Step 3: Pull the rear lamp assembly straight rearward
- Hold the lamp with both hands.
- Pull the lamp straight back toward the rear of the vehicle.
- Do not twist the lamp outward sharply. It is held by plastic alignment pins.
- If it feels stuck, use the plastic trim removal tool carefully between the lamp and body to help release it.
Step 4: Remove the turn signal bulb socket
- Find the rear turn signal bulb socket on the back of the lamp assembly.
- The turn signal bulb uses an amber bulb and is usually the socket for the flashing indicator.
- Use your hand with clean nitrile gloves to rotate the socket counterclockwise about a quarter turn.
- Pull the socket straight out of the lamp housing.
Step 5: Replace the bulb
- Use clean nitrile gloves to pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
- Push the new rear turn signal bulb, amber 7440A/7440NA style straight into the socket until fully seated.
- Make sure the bulb sits squarely and does not wobble.
- Tip: Do not touch the glass.
Step 6: Reinstall the bulb socket
- Insert the socket back into the rear lamp housing.
- Turn the socket clockwise until it locks in place.
- Make sure the rubber seal sits flat so water cannot enter the lamp.
Step 7: Test the new turn signal bulb
- Keep the lamp assembly supported by hand.
- Turn the ignition to ON without starting the hybrid system if possible.
- Activate the turn signal for the side you repaired.
- Check that the new bulb flashes normally.
- Turn the ignition and lights OFF before final reassembly.
Step 8: Reinstall the rear lamp assembly
- Line up the plastic guide pins with the holes in the body.
- Push the lamp straight forward until it seats flush against the body.
- Use the 10mm socket and 1/4-inch ratchet to reinstall the mounting bolts.
- Tighten gently until snug. Do not overtighten plastic lamp mounts.
- Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs) if using a small torque wrench.
Step 9: Reinstall covers and close the liftgate
- Use your hand to snap any bolt covers back into place.
- Close the liftgate carefully.
- Use your eyes to confirm the lamp sits evenly with the body panel.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Turn on the left and right turn signals and verify both rear lamps flash correctly.
- ✅ Press the hazard switch and confirm both rear turn signal bulbs flash.
- ✅ If the signal still flashes rapidly, the bulb may be loose, incorrect, or there may be a wiring/socket issue.
- ✅ Check the lamp seal after installation to help prevent water intrusion.
