Step-by-step DIY guide with tools, parts list, safety tips, and testing instructions for rear signal bulb replacement

🔧 Rogue - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
You’ll be replacing the rear turn signal bulbs in the tail lights on your Rogue. The bulbs sit in the outer rear lamp units on each side of the vehicle and twist out from the back of the lamp.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 20–40 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🛑 Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key before starting.
- 🧤 Let the tail lamp area cool if the lights were just on; bulbs can get hot.
- 🚗 Park on level ground with the parking brake firmly set.
- 🔋 Battery disconnection is not required for this job, but do not operate the turn signals while the bulb socket is removed.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:

- 🧰 1/4" drive extension (3"–6")
- 🧰 Plastic trim removal tool
- 🧰 Flathead screwdriver (small)

- 🔧 Spare plastic trim clips - Qty: 4 (optional, in case any break)
📋 Before You Begin
- 🚗 Park the Rogue on level ground, shift to P, and set the parking brake.
- 🔦 Open the rear liftgate to access the interior trim near the tail lights.
- 📦 Remove any cargo from the rear area so you have space to work.
- 🧤 Put on gloves; they help grip parts and protect your hands.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Locate the rear turn signal area
- 🧰 Open the liftgate and stand behind the Rogue, looking at the outer tail lights on the body (not the ones on the liftgate).
- 🧰 On each side, look inside the cargo area, just behind the tail light. You’ll see a small interior trim panel or round access cover.
- Turn signals are in the outer tail lamp assemblies.
Step 2: Remove the interior access cover
- 🧰 Use the plastic trim removal tool to gently pry up the edge of the small access cover on the side trim.
- 🧰 If needed, use the small flathead screwdriver very gently to start the gap, then switch to the trim tool to avoid damage.
- 🧰 Pull the cover off and set it aside.
- Work slowly to avoid cracking the plastic.
Step 3: Identify the turn signal bulb socket
- 🧰 Look through the opening at the back of the tail lamp assembly. You will see multiple bulb sockets.
- 🧰 On the Rogue, the rear turn signal socket is usually the lower outer socket with an amber or clear bulb labeled as 7440-type.
- Compare left and right sides if unsure which socket it is.
Step 4: Remove the turn signal bulb socket
- 🧰 Grip the correct socket firmly with your hand.
- 🧰 Turn the socket about ¼ turn counterclockwise to unlock it from the tail lamp housing.
- 🧰 Pull the socket straight out of the lamp.
- If it sticks, wiggle gently while turning.
Step 5: Remove the old bulb
- 🧰 Hold the socket in one hand and the bulb in the other.
- 🧰 Pull the bulb straight out of the socket. It is a push-in (wedge) type bulb, so it does not twist.
- 🧰 If it is tight, gently rock it side to side while pulling.
- Do not crush the glass; pull from the base if possible.
Step 6: Install the new bulb
- 🧰 Take a new 7440 amber bulb out of the package. Try not to touch the glass with bare fingers; use gloves.
- 🧰 Apply a very small dab of dielectric bulb grease to the metal contacts on the bulb base. This helps prevent corrosion and makes future removal easier.
- 🧰 Push the new bulb straight into the socket until it is fully seated and snug.
- If it feels loose, remove and reinstall firmly.
Step 7: Reinstall the bulb socket into the tail lamp
- 🧰 Align the bulb and socket with the opening in the back of the tail lamp housing.
- 🧰 Insert the socket into the opening, making sure the tabs line up with the slots.
- 🧰 Turn the socket about ¼ turn clockwise until it stops. This locks it in place.
- Make sure the socket sits flush; no gap should remain.
Step 8: Test the new bulb
- 🧰 Before closing the access cover, sit in the driver’s seat.
- 🧰 Turn the ignition to ON (engine can stay off) and activate the left or right turn signal for the side you replaced.
- 🧰 Walk to the back of the Rogue and check that the rear turn signal flashes at normal speed and brightness.
- 🧰 If it does not light up or flashes very fast, turn the ignition OFF, reopen the socket, and make sure the bulb is fully inserted and the socket is locked properly.
Step 9: Reinstall the interior access cover
- 🧰 Once the bulb works correctly, line up the interior access cover with the opening.
- 🧰 Press it back into place by hand until the clips click in.
- 🧰 Run your fingers around the edge to make sure it is fully seated.
Step 10: Repeat on the other side
- 🧰 Repeat Steps 1–9 on the opposite side to replace the other rear turn signal bulb.
- Always replace turn signal bulbs in pairs.
✅ After Repair
- 🔁 Turn the ignition ON and check both rear turn signals, front turn signals, and the hazard lights to confirm they all work and flash at the same speed.
- 🚗 Take a short drive at night or in low light and check visibility of the signals from behind (have a helper or use reflections in glass or a wall).
- 📦 Put any cargo back in the rear area and ensure nothing is pressing on the interior trim covers you removed.
