🔧 Altima - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
This repair replaces the rear turn signal bulbs inside the tail lamp assemblies on your Altima. A failed bulb can make your turn signal blink fast and reduce visibility to other drivers.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 20-40 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the ignition off and remove the key/fob from the vehicle before working.
- ⚠️ Let the rear bulbs cool before touching them.
- ⚠️ Wear gloves or use a clean cloth when handling bulbs. Skin oil can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ Work gently around trunk trim clips. They can break if pried too hard.

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

- Flathead screwdriver

- 💡 Turn the exterior lights and hazard lights off.
- 🧤 Put on gloves before handling the new bulbs.
- 🔎 A trim clip removal tool is a small pry tool used to remove plastic push clips without damaging the trim.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the Trunk
- Use the trunk release or key fob to open the trunk fully.
- Use safety glasses before working under the trunk opening.
- Move loose cargo away from the side you are repairing.
Step 2: Remove the Trunk Side Trim Access
- Use a trim clip removal tool to gently remove the plastic clips holding the trunk liner near the tail lamp.
- If a clip is tight, use a flathead screwdriver to lift the center pin slightly, then pull the clip out.
- Fold the trunk liner back enough to see the rear of the tail lamp assembly.
- Go slow to avoid broken clips.
Step 3: Find the Turn Signal Bulb Socket
- Look behind the tail lamp assembly for the bulb sockets.
- The rear turn signal bulb socket is the socket for the amber turn signal circuit.
- Use a clean microfiber cloth to wipe dust away if the sockets are hard to see.
Step 4: Remove the Bulb Socket
- Use your hand to grip the rear turn signal bulb socket.
- Turn the socket counterclockwise about a quarter turn.
- Pull the socket straight out of the tail lamp housing.
- If the socket is hard to grip, use needle-nose pliers lightly on the socket tabs only.
- Do not pull on the wiring.
Step 5: Remove the Old Bulb
- Use nitrile gloves to hold the socket.
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
- If the bulb is stuck, gently wiggle it while pulling straight outward.
- Do not crush the glass bulb.
Step 6: Install the New Bulb
- Use nitrile gloves or a clean microfiber cloth to handle the new rear turn signal bulb.
- Push the new bulb straight into the socket until it seats fully.
- Make sure it is straight and secure.
- Never force the bulb sideways.
Step 7: Reinstall the Bulb Socket
- Insert the bulb socket back into the tail lamp housing.
- Turn the socket clockwise until it locks in place.
- No torque spec is used for this bulb socket. It locks by hand pressure only.
Step 8: Test the Turn Signal
- Turn the ignition to ON without starting the engine.
- Activate the turn signal for the side you repaired.
- Step behind the vehicle and confirm the rear turn signal flashes normally.
- Use the hazard switch to test both rear turn signal bulbs if replacing both sides.
Step 9: Reinstall the Trunk Trim
- Fold the trunk liner back into position.
- Use your hand to push the plastic clips back into place.
- If a clip center pin was lifted, press the center pin flush after installing the clip.
- Use the trim clip removal tool only if you need to realign a clip hole.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Confirm the turn signal no longer hyper-flashes, which means blinking very fast.
- ✅ Test left signal, right signal, and hazard lights.
- ✅ Check that the trunk liner is secure and no wiring is pinched.
- ✅ If the new bulb still does not work, inspect the socket for corrosion or heat damage.
