🔧 Rear Turn Signal Bulbs - Bulb Replacement

Replacing the rear turn signal bulbs on your Prius c is a straightforward job that can be done through the rear hatch area without removing the whole taillight assembly. The main goal is to access the bulb sockets, remove the old bulbs, and install the correct amber bulbs so both sides flash properly.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Turn the lights off and remove the key/fob from the vehicle before starting.
  • Let the rear lamp assemblies cool if they were recently on.
  • Use care when handling the bulb sockets and lamp housing so you do not crack the plastic.
  • If you are working near the rear hatch trim, avoid prying hard on clips.
  • No battery disconnect is required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Trim panel removal tool
  • Flat-blade screwdriver
  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

  • Rear turn signal bulb - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the rear hatch fully.
  • Switch the turn signals and lights off.
  • Replace both bulbs together.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the rear access area

  • Open the rear hatch and locate the inside access panels behind the taillights.
  • Use a trim panel removal tool to gently pop off the small access cover on the side you are servicing.
  • Set the cover aside so the clips do not get lost.

Step 2: Remove the bulb socket

  • Reach into the opening and find the rear turn signal bulb socket.
  • Use your hand to twist the socket counterclockwise and pull it straight out.
  • Do not force it.

Step 3: Replace the bulb

  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver if needed to gently release the bulb from the socket, but only if the bulb is tight.
  • Remove the old bulb by pulling it straight out.
  • Install the new bulb by pushing it firmly into the socket until fully seated.

Step 4: Reinstall the socket

  • Align the socket tabs with the housing.
  • Use your hand to twist the socket clockwise until it locks.
  • Make sure it sits flush and does not wobble.

Step 5: Test the new bulb

  • Turn on the ignition.
  • Activate the left and right turn signals one at a time.
  • Confirm the new bulb flashes normally.

Step 6: Reinstall the access cover

  • Put the trim cover back in place.
  • Press it until the clips snap in securely.
  • Repeat the same steps on the other side if needed.

✅ After Repair

  • Check both rear turn signals again with the hazard lights on.
  • Make sure the bulbs blink at the same brightness.
  • Verify the access covers are fully seated.
