🔧 Rear Turn Signal Bulbs - Bulb Replacement

Replace the rear turn signal bulbs by accessing the tail lamp assemblies from inside the cargo area. This is a simple repair, but be careful not to break the trim clips or over-tighten the lamp fasteners.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Turn the ignition off and remove the key before starting.
  • Let the rear lamps cool if they were recently on.
  • Use care around trim panels so you do not crack the plastic.
  • No battery disconnect is required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • Short extension
  • Trim panel removal tool
  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear turn signal bulb - Qty: 2

Assumption: your rear turn signal uses the common amber 7440A-style bulb.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the rear liftgate for access to the tail lamp area.
  • Have the new bulbs ready so you do not touch the glass with bare fingers.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the rear access area

  • Open the liftgate and go to the side with the burned-out turn signal bulb.
  • Remove the small cargo-side trim cover near the tail lamp using a trim panel removal tool.
  • Work slowly to avoid broken clips.

Step 2: Remove the tail lamp fasteners

  • Use a 10mm socket, ratchet, and short extension to remove the tail lamp retaining nuts.
  • Keep the hardware in a safe place.

Step 3: Remove the tail lamp assembly

  • Pull the tail lamp straight rearward with both hands.
  • If it feels stuck, wiggle it gently while pulling. Do not pry hard on the painted body panel.

Step 4: Replace the bulb

  • Twist the turn signal bulb socket counterclockwise by hand and remove it from the lamp housing.
  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket and install the new bulb.
  • Make sure the bulb is fully seated before reinstalling the socket.

Step 5: Reinstall the tail lamp

  • Reinstall the bulb socket into the lamp housing and twist it clockwise until locked.
  • Set the tail lamp back into position and align the locating pins.
  • Install the retaining nuts with the 10mm socket and snug them down.
  • Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).

Step 6: Reinstall trim and test

  • Reinstall the cargo trim cover by hand.
  • Turn the ignition on and test the rear turn signal on both sides.
  • Check that the lamp flashes normally and the lens is seated evenly.

✅ After Repair

  • Test both rear turn signals and the hazard flashers.
  • Verify the instrument cluster does not show a bulb warning.
  • If one side still does not work, inspect the socket for corrosion or a loose connection.
