🔧 ProMaster - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

You’ll remove the rear tail lamp assembly, twist out the turn-signal bulb socket, and swap in a new bulb. This fixes fast-blink, no-blink, or a dash bulb warning caused by a burned-out rear turn signal bulb.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.7 hours

Assumption: Your ProMaster uses a removable rear lamp held by two screws; bulb type may vary—match the old bulb to the new one.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key before working on exterior lighting.
  • ⚠️ Let bulbs cool first; they can be hot right after use.
  • ⚠️ Don’t touch the glass of a halogen bulb with bare fingers; skin oils can shorten bulb life.
  • ⚠️ Support the lamp housing so it doesn’t drop and crack.
  • Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Phillips #2 screwdriver
  • Torx T25 screwdriver
  • Plastic trim tool
  • Small pick tool
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear turn signal bulb (amber) - Match old bulb (common fits: 3157A or 7440A/WY21W style) - Qty: 1
  • Rear turn signal bulb (amber) - Replace in pairs for even brightness - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the rear doors fully so you can access the tail lamp screws.
  • Set your flashlight so it shines on the lamp area.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Access the rear tail lamp screws

  • Open the rear door on the side of the bulb you’re replacing.
  • Locate the two screws on the inboard edge of the tail lamp (the side closest to the doors).
  • Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver or Torx T25 screwdriver (whichever matches your screws) to remove both screws.

Step 2: Remove the tail lamp assembly

  • Hold the lamp with one hand and gently pull it straight rearward.
  • If it feels stuck, use a plastic trim tool to gently help it release from the locating pins (alignment pegs). Pull straight back—don’t twist.
  • If there’s an electrical connector you need to unplug, release the tab with a small pick tool and disconnect it.

Step 3: Remove the turn signal bulb socket

  • Identify the turn signal socket on the back of the lamp (it will be one of the twist-lock sockets).
  • Twist the socket counterclockwise about 1/4 turn by hand, then pull the socket out.

Step 4: Replace the bulb

  • Put on nitrile gloves.
  • Remove the old bulb:
    • If it’s a wedge-base bulb, pull it straight out of the socket.
    • If it’s a bayonet-base bulb, push in slightly and twist counterclockwise, then pull out.
  • Install the new amber bulb by matching the base style exactly and seating it fully.

Step 5: Reinstall the socket and lamp

  • Insert the socket back into the lamp and twist clockwise until it locks.
  • Reconnect the electrical connector (if removed) until it clicks.
  • Line up the locating pins and push the lamp straight into place.
  • Install the two lamp screws using a Phillips #2 screwdriver or Torx T25 screwdriver.
  • Torque to 2 Nm (18 in-lbs).

Step 6: Repeat on the other side (recommended)

  • Replace the other rear turn signal bulb the same way so both sides match in brightness and color.

âś… After Repair

  • Turn the ignition ON and test:
    • Left turn signal
    • Right turn signal
    • Hazard flashers
  • Walk behind the van and confirm the replaced side flashes at a normal speed (not rapid).
  • If it still fast-blinks, re-check bulb seating and the socket connection.
