🔧 Pathfinder - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
Your Pathfinder’s rear turn signal bulbs sit inside the outer rear tail lamp assemblies. You’ll remove the tail lamp, twist out the turn-signal bulb socket, swap the bulb, then reassemble and test.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
Assumption: Your Pathfinder uses standard (non-LED) rear turn signal bulbs.
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key before starting.
- ⚠️ Let the tail lamp cool if it was recently on; bulbs can be hot.
- ⚠️ Don’t touch the glass of the new bulb with bare fingers; skin oils can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ Support the tail lamp when it’s loose so it doesn’t scratch the paint.
- 🔋 Battery disconnect is not required for this job.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 10mm socket
- 1/4" ratchet
- 6" socket extension
- Phillips #2 screwdriver
- Plastic trim removal tool
- Clean nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Small flashlight
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Rear turn signal bulb (7440A amber) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
- Dielectric grease packet - Qty: 1
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Open the liftgate to access the inner edge of each tail lamp.
- Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the rear tail lamp fasteners
- Open the liftgate and locate the fasteners on the inboard edge of the tail lamp (the side closest to the liftgate opening).
- Remove any small trim caps using a plastic trim removal tool (a non-metal pry tool that helps prevent scratches).
- Remove the lamp fasteners using a 10mm socket with a 1/4" ratchet and 6" extension (or use a Phillips #2 screwdriver if equipped with screws).
Step 2: Pull the tail lamp straight back to release the retaining clips
- Hold the lamp with both hands and pull it straight rearward (toward you).
- If it feels stuck, wiggle gently while pulling straight back—don’t pry against the painted body.
- Pull straight back to avoid breaking clips.
Step 3: Remove the rear turn signal bulb socket
- Find the turn signal bulb socket on the back of the lamp (usually the amber/turn position).
- Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand to unlock it, then pull it out.
Step 4: Replace the bulb
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket by hand (no tools needed).
- Install the new 7440A amber bulb by pushing it straight in until fully seated.
- Apply a very small amount of dielectric grease packet to the socket seal (not on the bulb glass).
Step 5: Reinstall the socket and tail lamp
- Reinsert the bulb socket into the lamp and twist clockwise until it locks.
- Line up the lamp’s locating pins/clips with the body and push the lamp straight forward until it seats flush.
- Reinstall the fasteners using a 10mm socket (or Phillips #2 screwdriver if equipped).
- Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs)
Step 6: Repeat on the other side
- Repeat Steps 1–5 for the opposite rear turn signal.
- Replacing both sides prevents mismatched brightness.
âś… After Repair
- Turn the ignition ON and test: left signal, right signal, hazards.
- Walk behind the Pathfinder and confirm both rear turn signals flash bright and at a normal speed.
- If it “hyper-flashes” (very fast), recheck that the bulb is the correct type and fully seated.
