šŸ”§ Juke - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

Your A4

You'll be replacing the rear turn signal bulbs inside the tail lamp assemblies. This is usually a quick job from inside the cargo area, but on some builds you may need to remove the tail lamp to reach the bulb socket.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

Assumption: US-market incandescent rear turn signal bulbs.

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Turn the light switch OFF and remove the key before starting.
  • āš ļø Let the bulbs cool; they can be hot right after use.
  • āš ļø Wear gloves—skin oils can shorten bulb life.
  • āš ļø Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Trim removal tool
  • Phillips #2 screwdriver
  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • Torque wrench (in-lb or small Nm range)
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear turn signal bulb (amber 7440A / 7440NA) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the rear hatch and remove cargo so you can work comfortably.
  • Have your flashlight ready so you can see the bulb socket clearly.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Access the rear lamp area (inside cargo trim)

  • Open the hatch and look behind the tail lamp area inside the cargo compartment.
  • Use a trim removal tool to pop off the small access cover (if equipped).
  • If there is no access cover, gently pull back the side trim enough to reach the lamp fasteners using a trim removal tool. Go slow to avoid breaking clips.

Step 2: Try the ā€œsocket-onlyā€ bulb replacement (most common)

  • Locate the turn signal bulb socket on the back of the tail lamp (it will be one of the twist-lock sockets).
  • Grip the socket and rotate it counterclockwise about 1/8 turn, then pull it straight out.
  • Remove the bulb by pulling it straight out of the socket (wiggle gently if tight).
  • Install the new amber 7440A / 7440NA bulb by pushing it straight in until fully seated.
  • Reinstall the socket into the lamp and twist clockwise to lock.

Step 3: If you can’t reach the socket, remove the tail lamp assembly

  • From inside the cargo area, remove the tail lamp retaining nuts using a 10mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet.
  • Support the tail lamp with your free hand as the last nut comes off.
  • Pull the tail lamp straight rearward to release the locating pins. Don’t pry against painted panels.
  • Once the lamp is loose, twist the turn signal socket out (counterclockwise), replace the bulb, and twist the socket back in (clockwise) as in Step 2.
  • Reinstall the tail lamp and hand-start the nuts to avoid cross-threading.
  • Tighten the nuts with a torque wrench: Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).

Step 4: Reassemble the interior trim

  • Reinstall any access covers and press trim clips back in by hand.
  • If you removed any screws, reinstall them with a Phillips #2 screwdriver.

āœ… After Repair

  • Turn the ignition to ON and test left and right turn signals.
  • Walk behind your Juke and confirm the flashing is bright and steady on both sides.
  • If a bulb doesn’t light, remove the socket and re-seat the bulb firmly.
  • If the turn signal blinks fast, one side still has a bulb out—recheck both rear and front turn signal bulbs.

šŸ’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $60-$150 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $10-$30 (parts only)

You Save: $50-$120 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5-1.0 hours.
