🔧 Altima - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

Your Altima’s rear turn signal bulbs sit inside the outer tail lamp assemblies (left and right). You’ll access them from the trunk, remove the tail lamp, swap the bulb, and reinstall everything so the lamp seals properly.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key before starting.
  • ⚠️ Let the bulbs cool; they can be hot if recently used.
  • ⚠️ Don’t touch the glass of the new bulb with bare fingers; oils can shorten bulb life.
  • ⚠️ Make sure the tail lamp gasket seats correctly to prevent water leaks.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • 6" socket extension
  • Trim panel removal tool
  • Small flathead screwdriver
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Microfiber towel

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear turn signal bulb (7440A / amber) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and open the trunk.
  • Keep the light switch OFF.
  • Assumption: Sedan tail lamps with bulb-type rear turn signals (not LED).

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Expose the tail lamp mounting area

  • Lay a microfiber towel on the trunk sill to prevent scratches.
  • Use a trim panel removal tool (a plastic pry tool used to pop clips without damage) to open/remove the trunk side trim access flap behind the tail lamp.
  • If a clip is stubborn, use a small flathead screwdriver gently to help lift the clip center, then pull it out.

Step 2: Remove the tail lamp retaining nuts

  • Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • Use a 10mm socket, 6" extension, and 1/4" drive ratchet to remove the tail lamp retaining nuts (typically 2-3 nuts).
  • Set the nuts somewhere safe so they don’t fall into the trunk trim.

Step 3: Remove the tail lamp assembly

  • From outside the car, grip the tail lamp and pull it straight rearward.
  • Wiggle gently; don’t pry the paint.
  • If it feels stuck, double-check that all 10mm nuts are removed.

Step 4: Remove the turn signal bulb socket

  • Locate the turn signal socket on the back of the tail lamp (it will twist out).
  • Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand to unlock it, then pull it straight out.

Step 5: Replace the bulb

  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket by hand.
  • Install the new 7440A / amber bulb by pushing it straight in until fully seated.
  • If you accidentally touch the bulb glass, wipe it with a clean microfiber towel.

Step 6: Reinstall the socket and tail lamp

  • Insert the socket back into the housing and twist clockwise to lock.
  • Align the tail lamp locating pins with the body holes, then press the lamp straight into place.
  • Reinstall the retaining nuts using the 10mm socket, extension, and ratchet.
  • Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs)

Step 7: Reinstall trunk trim

  • Reinstall the access flap/trim and push any clips back in by hand.

✅ After Repair

  • Turn the ignition ON and test the left and right turn signals.
  • Test the hazard lights to confirm both rear turn signals flash evenly.
  • Confirm the tail lamp sits flush and there are no gaps (prevents water leaks).
