🔧 Outlander Sport - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
Your rear turn signal bulbs live inside the outer tail lamp assemblies. The job is mostly trim access, removing the tail lamp, swapping the bulb, then reinstalling everything so the lamp seals out water.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and switch all exterior lights OFF before starting.
- ⚠️ Let bulbs cool before touching; they can be hot.
- ⚠️ Wear gloves; skin oils can shorten an incandescent bulb’s life.
- ⚠️ Support the tail lamp when it’s loose; don’t let it hang by the wiring.

📋 Before You Begin
- Park on a level surface and set the parking brake.
- Open the liftgate for access to the rear cargo-side trim.
- Tip: Do one side at a time.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Access the tail lamp fasteners (inside cargo area)
- Use a plastic trim removal tool to pop off the small access cover behind the tail lamp area (left or right side).
- Use a small flashlight to locate the tail lamp retaining nuts/fasteners.
- Trim tool = plastic pry tool to prevent scratches.
Step 2: Remove the tail lamp retaining nuts
- Use a 10mm socket, 1/4" drive ratchet, and 6" socket extension (1/4" drive) to remove the tail lamp nuts.
- Set the nuts somewhere safe so they don’t fall into the trim.
Step 3: Remove the tail lamp assembly
- From outside the vehicle, hold the lamp and pull it straight rearward to release the alignment pins/clips.
- If it feels stuck, wiggle gently while pulling straight back. Do not pry hard on painted surfaces.
Step 4: Remove the rear turn signal bulb socket
- Locate the turn signal bulb socket on the back of the tail lamp.
- Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand and pull it out of the housing.
Step 5: Replace the bulb
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
- Push the new bulb straight into the socket until fully seated.
- Wear nitrile gloves to keep the bulb clean.
Step 6: Reinstall the socket and tail lamp
- Insert the socket back into the tail lamp and twist clockwise to lock.
- Align the tail lamp’s guide pins with the body and press the lamp straight in until it seats flush.
- Reinstall the nuts using the 10mm socket, 1/4" drive ratchet, and 6" socket extension (1/4" drive).
- Use a torque wrench (inch-pound): Torque to 7 Nm (62 in-lbs).
Step 7: Reinstall the interior access cover
- Snap the access cover back into place by hand.
- Repeat Steps 1–7 on the other side if you’re replacing both bulbs (recommended).
✅ After Repair
- Test both rear turn signals and hazard lights.
- If the turn signal “blinks fast,” the bulb may be incorrect type, not seated, or a socket connection is loose.
- Check that the tail lamp sits evenly and the gasket is sealed (prevents water leaks).
