🔧 Outlander - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
Your Outlander’s rear turn signal bulb sits inside the rear tail lamp and can be replaced from inside the liftgate area. This is a quick job: you’ll open the rear hatch, access the bulb socket, swap the bulb, and test the signal.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.7 hours
Assumption: Your rear turn signal uses an amber 7440 bulb (common on this Outlander).
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key before starting.
- ⚠️ Bulbs can get hot—let the tail lamps cool for 5-10 minutes.
- ⚠️ Avoid touching the glass of the new bulb with bare fingers (skin oils can shorten bulb life).
- ⚠️ No battery disconnect is required for this repair.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Nylon trim removal tool set
- Phillips screwdriver #2
- Small flashlight
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Rear turn signal bulb (7440 amber) - Qty: 1 (replace in pairs recommended)
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and shift to P.
- Open the liftgate for access and good lighting.
- Set your flashlight nearby so you can clearly see the bulb socket positions.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the access panel
- Open the liftgate.
- On the side you’re replacing (left or right), locate the small interior trim access cover behind the tail lamp area.
- Use a nylon trim removal tool set to gently pry the cover open. (A trim tool is a plastic pry tool that helps you remove panels without scratching.)
Step 2: Find the turn signal bulb socket
- Use a small flashlight to look into the opening.
- You’ll see one or more bulb sockets. The turn signal socket is typically the one that lines up with the amber/flashing section of the tail lamp.
- Tip: If unsure, watch the socket while a helper signals.
Step 3: Remove the bulb socket
- Put on nitrile gloves.
- Grip the socket firmly and rotate it counterclockwise about 1/4 turn to unlock it.
- Pull the socket straight out of the tail lamp.
Step 4: Replace the bulb
- Remove the old bulb by pulling it straight out of the socket.
- Install the new 7440 amber bulb by pushing it straight in until fully seated.
- Avoid touching the bulb glass with bare skin.
Step 5: Reinstall the socket and panel
- Insert the socket back into the tail lamp, making sure the tabs line up.
- Rotate the socket clockwise about 1/4 turn until it locks.
- Snap the access cover back into place. If your cover uses screws on your trim panel, reinstall them with a Phillips screwdriver #2 (snug only; do not overtighten).
Step 6: Test the repair
- Turn the ignition to ON.
- Turn on the left or right turn signal (the side you repaired) and confirm proper flashing.
- If it doesn’t work: re-check that the bulb is fully seated and the socket is fully locked.
âś… After Repair
- Walk around and confirm the rear turn signal is bright and blinking normally.
- If the turn signal “hyper-flashes” (blinks fast), the bulb may be incorrect type or not seated fully.
- Tip: Replacing both sides together keeps brightness matched.
