How to Replace Rear Turn Signal Bulbs on a 2016 Mazda CX-9 (Tail Light Removal)
Step-by-step DIY instructions with required tools/parts, safety tips, and fast-flash troubleshooting

🔧 CX-9 - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
You’ll remove the rear tail lamp assembly, twist out the turn-signal socket, and swap the bulb. This restores proper signaling and prevents fast-flash (hyperflash) caused by a burned-out bulb.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
Assumption: your CX-9 uses a replaceable amber rear turn-signal bulb (common on Sport trims).
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- ⚠️ Turn ignition fully OFF and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.
- ⚠️ Let the tail lamp cool before handling (bulbs can get hot).
- ⚠️ Don’t touch the glass of the new bulb with bare fingers (skin oil can shorten bulb life).
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 10mm socket
- 1/4" drive ratchet
- 6" extension (1/4" drive)
- Trim removal tool (plastic)
- Small flathead screwdriver
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Flashlight

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Rear turn signal bulb (amber) - Qty: 1 (replace in pairs recommended)
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Open the rear hatch for easy access.
- Lay a towel on the bumper edge below the lamp to prevent scratches.
- Have your flashlight ready so you can see the fasteners and bulb sockets clearly.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Access the tail lamp fasteners
- Open the hatch and locate the access area behind the tail lamp on the inside edge.
- Use a trim removal tool (plastic) to carefully pop off the small interior access cover (if equipped).
- If a clip is stubborn, use a small flathead screwdriver gently to start it, then finish with the trim tool.
- Tip: Pry slowly to avoid breaking clips.
Step 2: Remove the tail lamp nuts/bolts
- Use a 10mm socket with a 1/4" drive ratchet and 6" extension to remove the tail lamp retaining nuts/bolts you can see.
- Set the hardware aside where it won’t roll away.
Step 3: Release the tail lamp from the body clips
- Grab the tail lamp with both hands and pull it straight rearward (toward you).
- If it feels stuck, wiggle gently while pulling—don’t twist hard.
- Once it pops free, support it so it doesn’t scratch paint.
- Tip: Pull straight back to avoid breaking alignment pins.
Step 4: Remove the rear turn-signal bulb socket
- On the back of the tail lamp, find the turn-signal socket (usually one of the larger twist-lock sockets).
- Turn the socket counterclockwise about 1/4 turn by hand and pull it out.
- If it’s tight, use nitrile gloves for better grip.
- Tip: Don’t force it—re-seat and try again.
Step 5: Replace the bulb
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket by hand.
- Install the new rear turn signal bulb (amber) by pushing it straight in until fully seated.
- Avoid touching the glass; use nitrile gloves.
Step 6: Test the turn signal before reassembly
- Reinsert the socket into the tail lamp and twist clockwise to lock.
- Turn ignition to ON and activate the turn signal for that side.
- Verify: normal blink speed, proper brightness, and no warning message.
- Turn ignition OFF again before final assembly.
Step 7: Reinstall the tail lamp
- Align the tail lamp locating pins with the body holes.
- Press the lamp straight forward until it seats flush.
- Reinstall the nuts/bolts using a 10mm socket, 1/4" drive ratchet, and 6" extension.
- Tighten snugly—do not overtighten (the lamp housing can crack).
Step 8: Reinstall interior access cover/trim
- Snap the access cover and any clips back into place by hand.
- Use a flashlight to confirm the trim sits flat with no gaps.
âś… After Repair
- Test left and right rear turn signals, hazards, and brake lights.
- Check that the tail lamp is seated evenly and doesn’t wiggle.
- If the turn signal still fast-flashes, the bulb may be the wrong type or there may be a socket/wiring issue.
