🔧 RX350 - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement (Both Sides)
The rear turn signal bulbs are accessed from inside the rear cargo area, behind the side trim panels. You’ll remove a small access cover, twist the bulb socket out of the tail lamp, and install new bulbs (replace both sides so brightness/color match).
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and set the parking brake before working around the rear lights.
- ⚠️ Let bulbs cool before touching them.
- ⚠️ Don’t touch bulb glass with bare fingers; use nitrile gloves.
- ⚠️ Use trim tools (not a screwdriver) on interior panels to avoid cracking them.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Plastic trim tool
- Phillips screwdriver #2
- 10mm socket
- 1/4" drive ratchet
- 6" socket extension
- Flashlight
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Clean lint-free rag
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Rear turn signal bulb (amber, correct fitment) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
- Dielectric grease (small packet) - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Open the rear liftgate for better access and lighting.
- Use a flashlight to find the small access door in the cargo area side trim behind each tail lamp.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the cargo-side access panel
- Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
- Use a plastic trim tool to gently pry open/remove the access cover in the cargo side trim (left side for driver-side lamp, right side for passenger-side lamp).
- Use a flashlight to look inside and locate the bulb sockets at the back of the tail lamp.
Step 2: Remove the rear turn signal bulb socket
- Identify the turn signal socket (usually the socket that leads to an amber bulb).
- Grip the socket and rotate it counterclockwise about a quarter turn, then pull it straight out of the housing.
- Tip: Turn gently; don’t force plastic.
Step 3: Replace the bulb
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket (most are push-in style).
- Install the new bulb by pushing it straight into the socket until fully seated.
- If you accidentally touch the bulb glass, wipe it with a clean lint-free rag.
- Apply a tiny amount of dielectric grease to the socket seal (optional), not on the bulb contacts.
Step 4: Reinstall the socket
- Insert the socket back into the tail lamp, making sure it sits flush.
- Rotate the socket clockwise until it locks.
Step 5: Function test (before closing panels)
- Turn the ignition to ON (engine off is fine) and switch on the hazard lights.
- Confirm the repaired side flashes normally (not fast).
- If it flashes fast, remove the socket again and re-check bulb seating and socket lock.
Step 6: Repeat on the other side
- Replace the other rear turn signal bulb using the same steps.
Step 7: Reinstall the access covers
- Snap the access covers back into the cargo trim by hand.
Step 8: If your RX350 requires tail lamp removal (only if you can’t twist the socket out)
- Use a 10mm socket, ratchet, and 6" extension to remove the tail lamp retaining nuts accessible behind the cargo trim.
- Carefully pull the tail lamp straight rearward to release the alignment pins (do not pry against the painted body).
- Replace the bulb as in Steps 2–4, then reinstall the lamp and nuts.
- Torque to 5.4 Nm (48 in-lbs)
✅ After Repair
- Test left and right turn signals and hazards again.
- Walk behind the RX350 at night to confirm both sides match in brightness and flash rate.
- Make sure all access covers are secure to prevent rattles.
