How to Replace Rear Turn Signal Bulbs on a 2016 Kia Rio (Tail Lamp Removal)
Step-by-step trunk-access instructions with tools/parts list, safety tips, and testing for hyper-flash

🔧 Rio - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
You’ll be removing the rear tail lamp assembly from inside the trunk, swapping the turn-signal bulb, then reinstalling everything. This is usually needed when the bulb burns out or you get a fast “hyper-flash” turn signal.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn all lights OFF and remove the key before starting.
- ⚠️ Bulbs can be hot—let the lamp cool for 5-10 minutes.
- ⚠️ Wear gloves: bulb glass can be sharp if it breaks.
- ⚠️ Don’t touch the new bulb’s glass with bare fingers; oils can shorten bulb life.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Safety glasses
- Nitrile gloves
- Flashlight
- Phillips #2 screwdriver
- 10mm socket
- 1/4" drive ratchet
- 6" socket extension
- Plastic trim tool set
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Rear turn signal bulb (amber) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
- Dielectric grease - Qty: 1
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Open the trunk and remove any cargo so you can work comfortably.
- Trim tool = plastic pry tool for clips.
- Assumption: Your Rio uses a removable trunk-access tail lamp (typical) and an amber rear turn bulb; HowToo will match the exact bulb by fitment.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Access the tail lamp fasteners inside the trunk
- Use a flashlight to locate the trunk-side access panel/trim behind the tail lamp area.
- If trim is in the way, use a plastic trim tool set to gently pop out any push-clips (pull straight out to avoid breaking them).
Step 2: Remove the tail lamp retaining hardware
- Depending on build, you’ll have either nuts or screws holding the lamp.
- If you see nuts: use a 10mm socket, 1/4" drive ratchet, and 6" socket extension to remove them.
- If you see screws: use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove them.
- Torque note: Kia typically does not publish a service torque for these small lamp fasteners—reinstall snug only (do not overtighten; the lamp can crack).
Step 3: Remove the tail lamp assembly
- From outside the car, hold the lamp with both hands and pull it straight rearward.
- If it feels stuck on the alignment pins, wiggle gently while pulling straight back (do not pry against painted body panels).
- Steady pull beats hard yanking.
Step 4: Remove the rear turn signal bulb socket
- Find the turn signal socket on the back of the lamp (it’s one of the twist-lock sockets).
- Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand and pull it out.
- Twist-lock socket = a socket that turns to unlock.
Step 5: Replace the bulb
- Wear nitrile gloves.
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket (some types may need a slight twist—pull gently first).
- Install the new rear turn signal bulb (amber) fully into the socket.
- Optional: apply a tiny amount of dielectric grease to the socket seal (not on the bulb glass).
Step 6: Reinstall socket and tail lamp
- Reinsert the socket into the lamp and twist clockwise until it locks.
- Align the lamp’s guide pins to the body holes, then push the lamp straight into place.
- Reinstall the nuts with a 10mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet or the screws with a Phillips #2 screwdriver.
- Reinstall any trunk trim/clips using the plastic trim tool set (press clips straight in).
âś… After Repair
- Turn the ignition ON and test: left signal, right signal, and hazards.
- Verify the flash rate is normal (fast flashing usually means a bulb isn’t working or isn’t seated).
- Check that the tail lamp sits flush with the body and doesn’t wiggle.
