🔧 QX80 - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
Your QX80’s rear turn signal bulb sits inside the outer tail lamp assembly. The job is mostly trim access + removing the tail lamp so you can twist out the bulb socket and swap the bulb.
Assumption: Your QX80 uses a serviceable amber rear turn bulb (common type: 7440A). If your tail lamp is LED-only, there may be no bulb to replace.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and lights OFF before starting.
- ⚠️ Let the bulbs cool first; they can be hot.
- ⚠️ Do not touch the glass part of a halogen bulb with bare fingers (skin oils can shorten bulb life).
- ⚠️ Pull the tail lamp straight back; don’t pry hard on the painted body.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Rear turn signal bulb (amber, 7440A equivalent) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
- Dielectric grease - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Open the liftgate for access and better lighting.
- Set your flashlight in the cargo area so you can see the access panels clearly.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Access the tail lamp fasteners
- Open the liftgate and stand at the rear corner on the side you’re replacing.
- Use a flashlight to locate the small interior access cover panel behind the tail lamp area in the cargo trim.
- Use a plastic trim removal tool set to pop off the access cover. A trim tool is a plastic pry tool that helps remove panels without scratching them.
Step 2: Remove the tail lamp retaining nuts/screws
- Use a 10mm socket, 6" socket extension (1/4" drive), and 1/4" drive ratchet to remove the tail lamp retaining nuts (typically 2).
- If your access cover uses screws, remove them with a Phillips screwdriver #2.
- Set the nuts aside where they won’t fall into the trim.
Step 3: Remove the tail lamp assembly
- Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
- Grip the tail lamp and pull it straight rearward (toward you). It is held by alignment pins/clips.
- Wiggle gently; don’t yank.
- If it feels stuck, use a plastic trim removal tool set to gently help it release at the edge—do not pry on painted metal.
Step 4: Remove the turn signal bulb socket
- On the back of the tail lamp, find the turn signal bulb socket (usually the amber bulb position).
- Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand and pull it out of the housing.
Step 5: Replace the bulb
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
- Install the new rear turn signal bulb (amber, 7440A equivalent) by pushing it straight into the socket until fully seated.
- Apply a very small dab of dielectric grease to the socket seal if it looks dry (keep grease off the bulb glass).
Step 6: Reinstall the socket and tail lamp
- Insert the socket back into the tail lamp and twist clockwise until it locks.
- Line up the tail lamp’s guide pins/clips with the body holes, then push the lamp straight forward until fully seated.
- Reinstall the retaining nuts using a 10mm socket, 6" socket extension (1/4" drive), and 1/4" drive ratchet.
- Final tighten with a torque wrench (inch-pound or low-range) (specialty): Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).
- Reinstall the access cover using the plastic trim removal tool set (and Phillips screwdriver #2 if equipped with screws).
Step 7: Repeat for the other side (recommended)
- Replace the bulb on the other rear side using the same steps. Bulbs age together, so pairs help prevent another failure soon.
✅ After Repair
- Turn the ignition ON and test both rear turn signals and the hazard lights.
- If the turn signal “blinks fast,” the bulb may be the wrong type, not seated, or another bulb on that side is out.
- Check that the tail lamp sits flush and even, with no gaps that could let water in.
