🔧 QX50 - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
You’ll access the rear combination lamp from inside the cargo area, remove a small access cover, then twist the turn-signal bulb socket out to replace the bulb. Replacing weak or burned-out bulbs restores proper signaling and avoids fast-blink (hyperflash) on the dash.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key before starting.
- ⚠️ Let the rear lamps cool if they were recently on.
- ⚠️ Wear gloves; bulb glass can be hot and skin oils can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ Support the liftgate securely if it’s open while you work.
- Battery disconnect is not required for this bulb replacement.

- Open the liftgate for easier access to the cargo-side trim.
- Tip: Do one side at a time.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Assumption: Your QX50 uses a replaceable rear turn-signal bulb in the outer rear lamp accessed from the cargo area (common on this model).
Step 1: Confirm which side bulb is out
- Turn the ignition to ON (engine off is fine) and switch on the turn signal.
- Walk behind the QX50 and confirm which rear turn signal is not flashing.
- Turn ignition OFF again before disassembly.
Step 2: Remove the cargo-area access cover
- Go to the side you’re replacing.
- Use a trim removal tool (plastic) (specialty) to gently pop off the small access door/cover behind the tail lamp area.
- If your panel uses a screw, remove it with a Phillips screwdriver #2.
- Tip: Pry at the notch, not the edges.
Step 3: Remove the lamp retaining nuts (if required for access)
- If the bulb socket cannot be reached easily, you’ll need to loosen the lamp assembly.
- Use a 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 1/4" extension (3") to remove the lamp retaining nuts inside the body.
- Set the nuts aside where they won’t get lost.
- During reassembly: Torque to 7 Nm (62 in-lbs).
Step 4: Pull the rear lamp straight back (only if you removed nuts)
- With the nuts removed, use both hands and pull the lamp straight rearward.
- Do not twist hard; there are alignment pins that slide out of grommets.
- Support the lamp so it doesn’t scratch the paint.
Step 5: Remove the rear turn signal bulb socket
- Locate the turn-signal socket on the back of the lamp (usually the larger socket near the middle).
- Rotate the socket counterclockwise about 1/4 turn by hand and pull it out.
- If it’s tight, wear nitrile gloves for better grip.
Step 6: Replace the bulb
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
- Push the new bulb straight in until fully seated.
- Do not touch the glass with bare fingers; use nitrile gloves.
- Tip: Match the old bulb base exactly.
Step 7: Reinstall the socket and lamp
- Reinstall the socket into the lamp and rotate clockwise to lock.
- If you removed the lamp, line up the pins and press the lamp straight in until fully seated.
- Reinstall the nuts with a 10mm socket and 1/4" ratchet, then Torque to 7 Nm (62 in-lbs).
- Reinstall the access cover by pressing it back into place.
Step 8: Repeat on the other side (recommended)
- Even if only one bulb failed, replacing both rear turn bulbs helps keep brightness and color matched.
✅ After Repair
- Turn the ignition ON and test left and right turn signals.
- Test hazard lights to confirm both rear turn signals flash evenly.
- Check that the lamp housing is fully seated and the access cover is secure.
- If you still get fast-blink, re-check the bulb seating and socket lock.
