🔧 Accent - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

You’ll access the rear of the tail lamp from inside the cargo area, twist out the turn-signal bulb socket, and swap in a new bulb. This fixes a fast-blink turn signal, a bulb-out warning, or a rear signal that doesn’t light.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.7 hours

Assumption: Most Accents use an amber single-filament rear turn bulb (commonly 1156A); match your old bulb exactly.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key before starting.
  • ⚠️ Let the bulbs cool first; they can get very hot.
  • ⚠️ Don’t touch the new bulb glass with bare fingers; oils can shorten bulb life. Use gloves.
  • ⚠️ Make sure the bulb locks fully in the socket; a loose bulb can cause intermittent operation.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Trim removal tool (plastic)
  • Phillips screwdriver #2
  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" ratchet
  • Small flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear turn signal bulb (amber, single-filament) - Qty: 1
  • Rear turn signal bulbs (amber, single-filament) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the hatch and remove/shift cargo so you can reach the side trim.
  • No battery disconnect is required for a simple bulb swap.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Access the tail lamp from inside

  • Open the hatch.
  • Use a small flashlight to find the tail lamp access area behind the side cargo trim.
  • If there’s a small access door/cover, pop it open using a trim removal tool (plastic).
  • If trim fasteners are in the way, remove them with a trim removal tool (plastic).

Step 2: Remove the turn-signal bulb socket

  • Locate the bulb sockets on the back of the tail lamp (you’ll see wiring going into twist-lock sockets).
  • Identify the turn-signal socket (usually the amber bulb position).
  • Grip the socket firmly and rotate it counterclockwise about 1/4 turn, then pull it straight out.

Step 3: Replace the bulb

  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket (single-filament wedge/push-in style).
  • Put on nitrile gloves before handling the new bulb.
  • Push the new bulb fully into the socket until it seats solidly.
  • If it feels loose, reseat it.

Step 4: Reinstall the socket

  • Insert the socket into the tail lamp opening.
  • Rotate clockwise about 1/4 turn until it locks.
  • Gently tug to confirm it’s locked in place.

Step 5: If your trim requires tail lamp removal (alternate path)

  • If you cannot reach the socket through an access opening, remove the tail lamp fasteners inside the cargo area.
  • Use a 10mm socket with a 1/4" ratchet to remove the tail lamp mounting nuts.
  • Carefully pull the tail lamp straight rearward to release the locating pins.
  • Replace the bulb as in Steps 2–4.
  • Reinstall the lamp and tighten the nuts evenly: Torque to 6 Nm (53 in-lbs).

Step 6: Reinstall trim

  • Reinstall any access cover and trim clips using the trim removal tool (plastic).
  • If any screws were removed, reinstall using a Phillips screwdriver #2 (snug only—don’t over-tighten plastic).

âś… After Repair

  • Turn the ignition ON and test the rear turn signal and hazards.
  • Verify the blink rate is normal (fast blinking usually means a bulb isn’t working or seated).
  • Check that the socket seal sits flat to keep moisture out.
