How to Replace Rear Turn Signal Bulbs on a 2016 GMC Canyon (Tail Lamp Removal)
Step-by-step DIY instructions with required tools, bulb tips, safety precautions, and post-repair testing

🔧 Canyon - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
You’ll remove the rear tail lamp housing, twist out the turn-signal bulb socket, and install a new bulb. This fixes a fast-blinking signal, a warning message, or a turn signal that’s out.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.7 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the lights off and remove the key before starting.
- ⚠️ Let bulbs cool first; they can get hot.
- ⚠️ Wear gloves and avoid touching the bulb glass with bare fingers (skin oil can shorten bulb life).
- ⚠️ Support the tail lamp when it’s loose so it doesn’t scratch the paint.
Assumption: your Canyon uses a standard twist-lock rear turn-signal bulb in the tail lamp housing.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Torx T15 screwdriver
- Plastic trim removal tool
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Flashlight

📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Open the tailgate so you can access the tail lamp fasteners.
- No battery disconnect is required for this repair.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the rear tail lamp screws
- Open the tailgate.
- Use a Torx T15 screwdriver to remove the two screws on the inboard edge of the tail lamp (the side closest to the tailgate opening).
- Place the screws somewhere safe.
Step 2: Pull the tail lamp housing straight back
- Grip the tail lamp with both hands.
- Pull the housing straight rearward to release the alignment pins (they are tight).
- If it’s stuck, use a plastic trim removal tool to gently help it start moving.
- Pull straight back; don’t pry sideways.
Step 3: Find the turn signal bulb socket
- With the tail lamp loose, look behind it for the bulb sockets.
- The turn signal socket is typically the amber/turn function socket within the tail lamp assembly.
- Use a flashlight to see the socket labels/wire positions clearly.
Step 4: Remove the turn signal bulb socket
- Use your hand (with nitrile gloves) to rotate the socket about 1/4 turn counterclockwise.
- Pull the socket straight out of the tail lamp.
Step 5: Replace the bulb
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
- Push the new rear turn signal bulb straight into the socket until fully seated.
- If it’s an LED replacement, it may be polarity-sensitive (if it doesn’t light, it must be flipped in some styles).
Step 6: Reinstall the socket and tail lamp
- Insert the socket back into the housing and twist clockwise about 1/4 turn to lock it.
- Align the tail lamp’s pins with the body grommets and push the lamp straight in until it sits flush.
- Reinstall the two screws using a Torx T15 screwdriver and snug them down evenly.
- Snug is enough; don’t overtighten plastic.
Step 7: Repeat on the other side
- Do the same steps for the other rear tail lamp.
- Replacing both bulbs together helps keep brightness and color matching.
✅ After Repair
- Test the left and right turn signals.
- Test the hazard lights (all corners should flash).
- Verify the tail lamp is fully seated and not loose.
- If the turn signal still “hyper-flashes,” recheck the bulb seating and that the correct bulb type was installed.
