🔧 Suburban - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

You’ll remove the rear tail lamp assembly, twist out the turn-signal bulb socket, and swap in a new bulb. This restores proper signaling and prevents fast-blink/hyperflash caused by a burnt bulb.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

Assumption: your LS uses replaceable rear turn-signal bulbs (not LED).

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • ⚠️ Turn the lighting switch OFF and remove the key before unplugging bulbs.
  • ⚠️ Let the tail lamp cool if lights were recently on.
  • ⚠️ Wear gloves—bulbs can get hot and glass can break.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Torx T15 screwdriver
  • Plastic trim removal tool
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear turn signal bulb (amber) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Open the liftgate to access the tail lamp fasteners.
  • 🧼 Have a clean glove or tissue ready—avoid touching the glass with bare fingers.
  • 🔧 A “trim removal tool” is a plastic pry tool that helps pop clips without scratching paint.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the rear tail lamp screws

  • Open the liftgate.
  • Use a Torx T15 screwdriver to remove the two screws on the inboard edge of the tail lamp (the edge closest to the liftgate opening).
  • Set the screws aside where they won’t get lost.

Step 2: Pull the tail lamp assembly free

  • Hold the tail lamp with both hands and pull it straight rearward (toward you) to release the alignment pins/clips.
  • If it feels stuck, use a plastic trim removal tool to gently help it start moving at the outer edge. Pull straight back to avoid breaking pins.

Step 3: Remove the turn-signal bulb socket

  • Locate the turn-signal bulb socket on the back of the tail lamp (a “socket” is the twist-lock holder the bulb plugs into).
  • Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand to unlock it, then pull it out of the housing.

Step 4: Replace the bulb

  • Wear nitrile gloves.
  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket (no twisting for most wedge-base bulbs).
  • Push the new rear turn signal bulb (amber) straight into the socket until fully seated.

Step 5: Reinstall the socket and tail lamp

  • Insert the socket back into the tail lamp and twist clockwise to lock.
  • Line up the tail lamp alignment pins with the body grommets, then push the assembly straight in until it seats flush.
  • Install the two screws using a Torx T15 screwdriver and Torque to 2.5 Nm (22 in-lbs) (snug—do not overtighten).

Step 6: Repeat on the other side (recommended)

  • Replace the opposite rear turn-signal bulb the same way. Pairs keep brightness even.

âś… After Repair

  • âś… Turn ignition ON and test left and right turn signals.
  • âś… Verify normal blink speed (fast blinking usually means a bulb isn’t working).
  • âś… Check that the tail lamp sits evenly and doesn’t wiggle.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $60-$150 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $10-$30 (parts only)

You Save: $50-$120 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5-1.0 hours.
