🔧 Envision - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
Your rear turn signals use a small amber bulb inside the outer tail lamp. Replacing it means accessing the lamp from inside the cargo area, swapping the bulb, then testing for proper flash rate.
Assumption: Your Envision has serviceable rear turn-signal bulbs (not a sealed LED-only tail lamp).
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- ⚠️ Turn all lights OFF and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.
- ⚠️ Let the tail lamp cool if it was recently on.
- ⚠️ Wear gloves; skin oil can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ Support the tail lamp as you pull it out so it doesn’t drop and crack.

You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Trim removal tool
- 10mm socket
- 1/4" ratchet
- 1/4" torque wrench (inch-pound or Nm)
- Small flat-blade screwdriver
- Flashlight
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Rear turn signal bulb (amber, 7440A) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
- Dielectric grease - Qty: 1
- Trim panel retainer clips - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Open the liftgate and remove any cargo so you can access the rear side panels.
- If you’re working on the left side, keep the cargo light from heating the area (turn the interior light off if possible).
- Lay a towel on the bumper corner below the tail lamp to protect paint.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Access the tail lamp mounting area
- Use a trim removal tool to pop off the small access cover behind the tail lamp (inside the cargo area).
- If a clip is stubborn, use a small flat-blade screwdriver gently under the clip head. Work slowly to avoid breaking clips.
- Use a flashlight to locate the tail lamp retaining nuts.
Step 2: Remove the tail lamp assembly
- Use a 10mm socket with a 1/4" ratchet to remove the tail lamp retaining nuts.
- Support the lamp with one hand, then pull the tail lamp straight rearward to release the alignment pins.
- If it feels stuck, wiggle gently—do not pry against the painted body.
Step 3: Remove the turn signal bulb socket
- Find the turn-signal socket on the back of the tail lamp (it’s the socket feeding the amber turn signal area).
- Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand and pull it out.
- Counterclockwise = lefty-loosey.
Step 4: Replace the bulb
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket (no twisting for 7440-style bulbs).
- Install the new rear turn signal bulb (amber, 7440A) by pushing it straight in until fully seated.
- Apply a tiny amount of dielectric grease to the socket seal (not on the glass). Dielectric grease is a non-conductive grease that helps prevent corrosion and water leaks.
Step 5: Reinstall the socket and tail lamp
- Insert the socket back into the tail lamp and twist clockwise to lock.
- Align the tail lamp guide pins with the body, then press the lamp straight inward until fully seated.
- Reinstall the retaining nuts using a 10mm socket.
- Final tighten with a 1/4" torque wrench: Torque to 2.5 Nm (22 in-lb)
- Reinstall the access cover and any trim clips (use new trim panel retainer clips if any broke).
Step 6: Repeat on the other side
- Replace the other rear turn signal bulb the same way. Pairs help keep brightness matching.
✅ After Repair
- Turn the ignition on and test both rear turn signals and hazards.
- Verify the flash rate is normal (rapid flashing usually means a bulb isn’t working or isn’t seated).
- Check that the tail lamp sits flush with the body and there are no gaps in the seal.
