šŸ”§ Encore - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

On your Encore, the rear turn signal bulbs are inside the tail lamp assemblies. You’ll remove the tail lamp from the body, swap the bulb, and reinstall everything so the lamp seals properly and doesn’t let water in.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Work on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • āš ļø Turn the light switch OFF and remove the key before starting.
  • āš ļø Don’t touch hot bulbs; let them cool first.
  • āš ļø Do not pry on painted edges; tape tools to avoid scratches.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 7mm socket
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • 3" 1/4" drive extension
  • Trim removal tool (specialty)
  • Painter’s tape
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear turn signal bulb (amber) - Qty: 2 Replace in pairs
  • Dielectric grease - Qty: 1

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park your Encore on a flat surface and set the parking brake.
  • Open the rear liftgate for access to the tail lamp screws.
  • Apply painter’s tape on the painted edge near the tail lamp. Prevents accidental scratches

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Access the tail lamp fasteners

  • Open the liftgate.
  • Locate the two tail lamp screws on the inboard edge of the tail lamp (visible with the liftgate open).
  • Use a 7mm socket with a 1/4" drive ratchet and 3" extension to remove both screws.

Step 2: Remove the tail lamp assembly

  • Grip the tail lamp with both hands and pull it straight rearward (away from the body).
  • If it feels stuck, use a trim removal tool (specialty) to gently help it release. A trim tool is a plastic pry tool that helps remove panels without damage.
  • Do not twist the lamp; it’s held by alignment pins that need a straight pull.

Step 3: Remove the turn signal bulb socket

  • On the back of the tail lamp, find the turn signal bulb socket (usually the amber/bigger bulb position).
  • Use your hand to rotate the socket counterclockwise about 1/4 turn, then pull it out.
  • Use a flashlight to confirm you have the correct socket before removing the bulb.

Step 4: Replace the bulb

  • Wear nitrile gloves to keep oils off the bulb glass.
  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
  • Push the new rear turn signal bulb (amber) straight into the socket until fully seated.
  • Apply a tiny amount of dielectric grease to the socket seal (rubber O-ring area). Dielectric grease helps keep moisture out and prevents corrosion.

Step 5: Reinstall the socket and tail lamp

  • Insert the bulb socket back into the tail lamp and rotate clockwise to lock it.
  • Align the tail lamp pins with the body grommets and push the lamp straight in until it seats flush.
  • Reinstall the two screws using the 7mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet.
  • Tighten snug only. Overtightening can crack the lamp

Step 6: Repeat on the other side

  • Repeat Steps 1-5 for the other rear tail lamp so both bulbs match brightness and color.

āœ… After Repair

  • Turn the ignition ON and test the left and right turn signals.
  • Verify the turn signal flashes normally (not fast). Fast flashing usually means a bulb isn’t working or isn’t seated.
  • Turn on the hazard lights and walk around to confirm both rear signals blink evenly.
  • Check that the tail lamp sits flush and the liftgate closes without rubbing.

šŸ’° DIY vs Shop Cost
