🔧 ILX - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
Your ILX’s rear turn signal bulbs sit inside the tail light housings. The job is usually done from inside the trunk by removing a small access cover, twisting the bulb socket out, and swapping the bulb.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.8 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key before starting.
- ⚠️ Let bulbs cool before touching; they can be hot.
- ⚠️ Do not touch new bulb glass with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ Support the trunk liner so it doesn’t tear or crease.
- 🔋 Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Confirm the correct side
- Turn the hazard lights on briefly, then turn them back OFF.
- Walk around and note which rear turn signal is out (left or right).
Step 2: Access the tail light from the trunk
- Use a plastic trim removal tool to gently pop open the trunk side access cover (or loosen the trunk liner on the side you’re working on).
- If your ILX has plastic push-clips holding the liner, pry the center pin up with the plastic trim removal tool, then remove the clip body.
Step 3: Remove the rear turn signal bulb socket
- Locate the bulb socket going into the tail lamp (it has wires leading to it).
- Grip the socket and rotate it counterclockwise about 1/4 turn, then pull it straight out.
- Turn gently; don’t yank the wires.
Step 4: Replace the bulb
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
- Install the new bulb by pushing it straight in until fully seated.
- Wear nitrile gloves so you don’t get oils on the bulb.
Step 5: Test before reassembly
- Reinsert the socket into the tail lamp and rotate clockwise to lock.
- Turn the ignition ON and test the turn signal and hazards.
- If it doesn’t work, turn ignition OFF and remove the bulb to reseat it firmly.
Step 6: Reinstall the trunk liner/access cover
- Reposition the trunk liner.
- Reinstall any clips by pushing the clip body in first, then press the center pin flush using your finger or the plastic trim removal tool.
- If any screws were removed, reinstall with a Phillips screwdriver #2.
Step 7: If your ILX requires tail lamp removal (only if you can’t access the socket)
- Remove the trunk liner further using the plastic trim removal tool to expose the tail lamp mounting nuts.
- Use a 10mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet to remove the tail lamp nuts.
- Pull the tail lamp straight back to release the locating pins, then remove the bulb socket as in Step 3.
- Reinstall the tail lamp and snug the nuts evenly. Torque to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs) if using a torque wrench.
✅ After Repair
- Verify left and right rear turn signals blink at a normal speed.
- Confirm brake lights and tail lights still work (easy to bump a connector).
- Make sure the trunk liner is clipped back securely so it won’t rattle.
