🔧 Tacoma - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

You’ll be removing the rear tail light assembly and then either swapping a regular bulb or, if your truck has LED turn signals, replacing the whole lamp assembly. I’ll walk you through both versions so you can match what you see on your Tacoma.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 20–40 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🔸Always park on level ground, shift to P, and set the parking brake.
  • 🔸Turn the ignition off and remove the key so lights cannot turn on.
  • 🔸Let the tail light area cool if the lights were just on; bulbs and lenses can get hot.
  • 🔸Work gently around the plastic tail light; prying too hard can crack the lens or break the clips.
  • 🔸Do not touch a new glass bulb with bare fingers; oil can shorten bulb life.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • 3" 1/4" drive extension
  • Plastic trim removal tool (specialty)
  • Small flathead screwdriver
  • Shop gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Clean lint-free cloth

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear turn signal bulb (7440 amber, wedge base) - Qty: 2 (replace in pairs)
  • Rear tail lamp assembly (LED type, left) - Qty: 1 (only if your lamp is damaged or LED has failed)
  • Rear tail lamp assembly (LED type, right) - Qty: 1 (only if your lamp is damaged or LED has failed)
  • Dielectric grease for bulb contacts - Qty: 1 small tube
  • Rear tail lamp mounting grommets/clips - Qty: 2–4 (optional, if originals are broken)

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park the Tacoma on level ground, shift to P, set the parking brake, and turn off the engine.
  • Turn the light switch to OFF and verify all rear lights are off.
  • Open the tailgate to get access to the screws that hold the tail light.
  • If you will unplug the lamp for a long time, you may disconnect the negative battery terminal using a 10mm socket for extra safety, but it is not strictly required for a simple bulb swap.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Identify which type of rear turn signal you have

  • Stand behind the Tacoma and look at one tail light with the lights off.
  • If you can clearly see a removable bulb socket at the back from inside the bed side (a round plastic socket that twists out), you likely have a regular bulb type.
  • If the back of the tail lamp is mostly sealed, with only a multi-pin plug and no obvious bulb socket for the turn signal, you likely have an LED tail lamp assembly.
  • Match what you see to the steps below

Step 2: Remove the tail lamp assembly (both versions)

  • Open the tailgate fully for access.
  • On the side of the tailgate opening, locate the two visible bolts holding the tail lamp to the body.
  • Use a 10mm socket with a 1/4" drive ratchet and 3" extension to remove the two bolts.
  • Keep the bolts in a safe place so they don’t fall into the bed gaps.
  • With the bolts removed, the lamp is still held by plastic pins on the outer edge. Grip the tail lamp with both hands and pull it straight backward (toward you), not sideways.
  • If it feels stuck, gently work a plastic trim removal tool between the lamp and body on the outer edge and pry lightly while pulling. Do not use metal tools on paint
  • Once loose, support the lamp with one hand so it doesn’t hang by the wiring.

Step 3: For regular bulb type – access the rear turn signal bulb

  • Look at the back of the removed tail lamp and find the turn signal bulb socket. On most Tacomas it is the lower outer socket and usually has amber-colored glass inside.
  • Grip the bulb socket and twist it counterclockwise about a quarter turn using your hand. No tools are usually needed, but you can use a small flathead screwdriver gently for extra leverage if tight.
  • Pull the socket straight out of the lamp to expose the bulb.

Step 4: Remove the old bulb (regular bulb type)

  • Hold the socket in one hand and the old bulb in the other.
  • On a 7440 wedge bulb, you simply pull it straight out of the socket. If it’s stuck, gently rock it side to side while pulling.
  • Inspect the old bulb; if the glass is dark or the filament is broken, it was bad.

Step 5: Install the new bulb (regular bulb type)

  • Put on shop gloves or hold the new bulb with a clean lint-free cloth so you do not touch the glass with bare fingers.
  • Apply a very small dab of dielectric grease to the metal contacts on the bulb base if available. Use very little, not a glob
  • Push the new 7440 amber bulb straight into the socket until it is fully seated and snug.

Step 6: Reinstall the bulb socket into the lamp (regular bulb type)

  • Line up the tabs on the bulb socket with the openings in the tail lamp housing.
  • Insert the socket fully, then twist it clockwise about a quarter turn by hand until it stops. It should feel secure, not loose.

Step 7: For LED tail lamp type – unplug and replace the assembly (only if LED has failed)

  • If your turn signal is integrated LED and not a replaceable bulb, locate the main wiring connector on the back of the lamp.
  • Press the locking tab on the connector with your thumb or a small flathead screwdriver and pull the plug straight out of the lamp.
  • Set the old tail lamp aside.
  • Take the new LED tail lamp assembly and plug the wiring connector firmly into the new lamp until it clicks.

Step 8: Refit the tail lamp onto the Tacoma

  • Check that the locating pins on the side of the lamp and the rubber grommets in the body are clean and not damaged. Replace grommets if torn.
  • Align the plastic pins on the outer edge of the lamp with the holes in the body.
  • Push the lamp straight forward into the body until you feel the pins snap into place. Use even pressure with both hands.
  • Install the two 10mm bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use the 10mm socket, extension, and ratchet to tighten the bolts evenly. Do not overtighten; these are small bolts. Tighten to about 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).
  • If you don’t have a torque wrench, tighten just past snug

Step 9: Repeat on the other side (recommended)

  • Even if only one bulb is out, it’s a good idea to replace both rear turn signal bulbs so they match in brightness and age.
  • Repeat Steps 2–8 on the opposite side.

âś… After Repair

  • 🔸Turn the ignition to ON (engine can stay off) and set the turn signal to left, then right. Check that the new rear turn signals flash normally.
  • 🔸Have a helper step on the brake and shift to reverse (with foot still on brake and wheels chocked if needed) so you can double-check that brake lights and reverse lights still work on both sides.
  • 🔸Verify the hazard lights flash correctly on both rear corners.
  • 🔸Check that the tail lamp is seated evenly against the body and there are no gaps.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $120–$200 (bulbs) or $350–$650 per LED lamp (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $10–$25 (bulbs) or $200–$400 per LED lamp (parts only)

You Save: $80–$250 on a bulb job, or $150–$250+ on an LED lamp, by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100–$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5–1.0 hours.
