🔧 Altima - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

Your Altima’s rear turn signal bulb sits inside the tail lamp housing and is serviced from inside the trunk. You’ll pull back the trunk liner, twist the correct bulb socket out, swap the bulb, and test the signal.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.7 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key before working on bulbs.
  • ⚠️ If the tail lamp was recently on, let it cool for a few minutes.
  • ⚠️ Don’t touch the glass of a new bulb with bare fingers; oils can shorten bulb life.
  • ⚠️ Support the trunk liner so it doesn’t tear on sharp edges.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Plastic trim clip removal tool
  • Small flat-blade screwdriver
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear turn signal bulb (match existing bulb type) - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and make sure the ignition is OFF.
  • Open the trunk and clear out cargo so you can reach the tail lamp area.
  • Set your flashlight ready so you can identify the correct bulb socket.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Access the tail lamp from inside the trunk

  • Open the trunk and use a flashlight to locate the trunk liner behind the tail lamp on the side you’re replacing.
  • Use a plastic trim clip removal tool to pop out the plastic push-clips holding the liner.
  • If a clip is tight, gently help it with a small flat-blade screwdriver while pulling with the trim tool. Go slow to avoid breaking clips.
  • Pull the liner back enough to reach the bulb sockets on the rear of the tail lamp.

Step 2: Identify the rear turn signal socket

  • Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • Use the flashlight to find the bulb socket that corresponds to the turn signal (the one that flashes amber when signaling).
  • If you’re unsure which socket it is, turn the hazard lights ON briefly, then OFF, and watch which section of the tail lamp flashes to help you confirm the correct location.

Step 3: Remove the turn signal bulb socket

  • Grip the socket firmly and rotate it counterclockwise by hand until it unlocks.
  • Pull the socket straight out of the tail lamp housing.

Step 4: Replace the bulb

  • Remove the old bulb by pulling it straight out of the socket.
  • Install the new bulb by pushing it straight in until fully seated. Don’t touch the glass.
  • Compare the old bulb and new bulb to confirm the same base and size before installing.

Step 5: Reinstall the socket and trunk liner

  • Insert the socket back into the tail lamp housing.
  • Twist the socket clockwise until it locks fully.
  • Reposition the trunk liner and reinstall the push-clips using the plastic trim clip removal tool to line them up, then press them in by hand.

Step 6: Test the repair

  • Turn the ignition ON and test the left/right turn signals and hazard lights.
  • Walk behind the car to confirm the replaced side flashes normally (not fast). Fast flashing usually means a bulb issue.

âś… After Repair

  • Confirm the bulb flashes at a normal speed on both turn and hazards.
  • If it still flashes fast, recheck that the bulb is fully seated and the socket is fully locked.
  • If the bulb works intermittently, inspect the socket for corrosion or looseness.
