🔧 Altima - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

You’ll be removing the rear tail light assembly from the body and swapping the turn signal bulb from the back side. This fixes a dead/blinking-fast rear signal and keeps you legal and safe.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 20–30 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🔸Always switch the ignition OFF and remove the key before starting.
  • 🔸Turn signal circuits can get warm—let the lights cool for a few minutes if they were just on.
  • 🔸Do not touch the glass of the new bulb with bare fingers; oil can shorten bulb life.
  • 🔸Work on level ground and keep the transmission in Park with the parking brake set.
  • 🔸Keep small nuts and clips in a container so you don’t lose them.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • 3" socket extension
  • Trim removal tool (plastic)
  • Flathead screwdriver (small)
  • Work light or flashlight
  • Mechanic gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear turn signal bulb (7440 or equivalent, amber) - Qty: 2 (replace in pairs)
  • Rear combination lamp gasket (if damaged) - Qty: 1–2
  • Dielectric grease (for bulb contacts) - Qty: 1 small tube

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park the Altima on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Turn off the ignition and all lights.
  • Open the trunk and clear out any cargo on the side you’ll be working on.
  • If you’re not sure which side is out, have a helper switch the hazard lights on briefly and check, then turn them off again.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Access the rear lamp area from the trunk

  • Open the trunk fully.
  • On the side you’re fixing, gently pull back the trunk side liner (carpet) near the tail light area.
  • Use the trim removal tool or flathead screwdriver to pop out any plastic clips holding the liner, prying gently to avoid breaking them.
  • Keep clips in a small cup so they don’t disappear.

Step 2: Remove tail lamp mounting nuts

  • Behind the liner, locate the two or three small nuts that hold the tail light to the body.
  • Use the 10mm socket with the 3" extension and ratchet to loosen and remove these nuts.
  • There is no heavy torque here; when reinstalling, snug them by hand to about Torque to 5–7 Nm (4–5 ft-lbs)—just firmly hand-tight, not cranked down.
  • Support the lamp with one hand so it doesn’t drop.

Step 3: Release the tail light from the body

  • From outside the car, place one hand on the side of the tail light and the other at the back edge.
  • Pull the lamp straight rearward (toward you) to release the alignment pins from the body.
  • If it feels stuck, wiggle gently while pulling straight back—do not pry hard with metal tools to avoid paint damage.
  • Pull straight back; avoid twisting the lamp.

Step 4: Disconnect the wiring and locate the turn signal socket

  • Once the lamp is loose, carefully pull it away from the car just enough to see the wiring.
  • Locate the harness connector going into the lamp. Press the tab with your fingers and pull the connector straight out. If tight, use the flathead screwdriver gently on the tab.
  • On the back of the lamp, find the bulb socket for the turn signal—on the Altima it’s usually the larger amber bulb socket toward the outer or upper area.
  • Match with the amber lens section if unsure.

Step 5: Remove the old turn signal bulb

  • Grasp the turn signal bulb socket.
  • Turn the socket about a quarter-turn counterclockwise by hand to unlock it, then pull it straight out of the lamp.
  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket. No tools needed—just fingers.
  • If it’s stuck, wiggle it gently while pulling.

Step 6: Install the new bulb

  • Before installing, lightly coat the metal contacts with a tiny dab of dielectric grease to help prevent corrosion.
  • Hold the new rear turn signal bulb (7440 or equivalent, amber) by the base, not the glass.
  • Push the bulb firmly straight into the socket until it seats fully.
  • If you touch the glass, wipe it with alcohol.

Step 7: Reinstall the bulb socket and test function

  • Insert the bulb and socket back into the opening in the tail lamp.
  • Turn the socket a quarter-turn clockwise by hand to lock it in place.
  • Reconnect the lamp wiring connector by pushing it in until it clicks.
  • Carefully hold the lamp roughly in position (you can even plug it in without fully mounting).
  • Have a helper turn the ignition to ON and activate the turn signal or hazard lights on the repaired side.
  • Check that the new bulb flashes at normal speed and brightness.
  • Turn ignition and lights back OFF when done.

Step 8: Reinstall the tail light assembly

  • Align the locating pins on the back of the lamp with the holes in the body.
  • Push the lamp straight forward into place until it sits flush with the body lines.
  • From inside the trunk, reinstall the mounting nuts by hand on the studs.
  • Use the 10mm socket and ratchet to gently tighten each nut evenly to about Torque to 5–7 Nm (4–5 ft-lbs). Do not overtighten to avoid cracking the lamp.

Step 9: Refit trunk liner and clips

  • Fold the trunk side liner (carpet) back into position over the lamp area.
  • Reinstall any plastic clips you removed, pushing them straight back into their holes by hand.
  • Use the trim removal tool or fingers to make sure each clip is fully seated.

âś… After Repair

  • 🔸Turn the ignition ON and switch on the hazard lights.
  • 🔸Walk around the Altima and confirm both rear turn signals flash correctly and at the same speed.
  • 🔸Check the tail lights, brake lights, and reverse lights to ensure nothing else was disturbed.
  • 🔸Close the trunk and take a short drive at night if possible to confirm visibility.
