🔧 Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

On your Tacoma, the rear turn signal bulb is accessed from inside the tail lamp housing at the back corners of the truck. You remove the lamp assembly, twist out the bulb socket, and swap the bulb.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Turn the lights off and let the bulbs cool before touching them.
  • Use a clean cloth or gloves when handling the new bulb. Oil from your fingers can shorten bulb life.
  • Be gentle with the tail lamp tabs. They can crack if forced.
  • No battery disconnect is required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • Short extension
  • Trim panel tool
  • Clean gloves
  • Safety glasses

📋 Before You Begin

  • Turn the headlights and turn signals off.
  • Open the tailgate for easier access to the tail lamp fasteners.
  • Replace both bulbs together.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the tail lamp fasteners

  • Open the tailgate.
  • Use the 10mm socket, ratchet, and short extension to remove the two tail lamp bolts.

Step 2: Release the tail lamp housing

  • Use the trim panel tool to gently pull the tail lamp straight rearward.
  • Work it out evenly so you do not bend the locating pins.
  • Pull straight back, not sideways.

Step 3: Remove the bulb socket

  • Find the rear turn signal bulb socket on the back of the lamp assembly.
  • Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand and pull it out.

Step 4: Replace the bulb

  • Remove the old bulb from the socket.
  • Install the new bulb by pressing it straight into the socket until fully seated.
  • Make sure the bulb is fully locked in place.

Step 5: Reinstall the socket and lamp

  • Insert the socket back into the tail lamp housing.
  • Twist it clockwise to lock it in.
  • Set the tail lamp back into position and install the two 10mm bolts.
  • Torque to 5.5 Nm (49 ft-lbs).

Step 6: Test the repair

  • Turn on the ignition and activate the rear turn signal.
  • Check that the bulb flashes normally.
  • Repeat on the other side if needed.

✅ After Repair

  • Verify both rear turn signals flash at the correct speed.
  • Check the brake lights and tail lights while you are there.
  • Make sure the tail lamp sits flush and the tailgate closes without contact.
