🔧 Highlander - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

This repair replaces the rear turn signal bulb in the tail lamp assembly on your Highlander. A burned-out rear turn signal makes your vehicle harder to see when turning or changing lanes, so replace it as soon as possible.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 15-30 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition off and remove the key before starting.
  • ⚠️ Let the rear lamps cool if they were recently on.
  • ⚠️ Wear gloves so skin oil does not get on the new bulb glass.
  • ⚠️ Do not pry hard on the tail lamp. The plastic locating pins can break.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this bulb replacement.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4-inch drive ratchet
  • Plastic trim removal tool
  • Clean nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear turn signal bulb - Qty: 1 per side
  • Rear turn signal bulbs - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park your Highlander on level ground.
  • 🅿️ Move the shift lever to Park and set the parking brake.
  • 💡 Turn the exterior lights and hazard lights off.
  • 🧤 Put on clean nitrile gloves before handling the new bulb.
  • 📌 A plastic trim removal tool is a non-metal pry tool that helps release trim without scratching paint.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the Liftgate

  • Use your hand to open the rear liftgate fully.
  • Stand on the side with the burned-out rear turn signal bulb.
  • Use safety glasses to protect your eyes from dust or falling debris.

Step 2: Remove the Tail Lamp Bolts

  • Use a 10mm socket and 1/4-inch drive ratchet to remove the two exposed tail lamp mounting bolts along the inner edge of the lamp.
  • Set the bolts in a small tray or safe spot.
  • Do not drop bolts inside the body.

Step 3: Release the Tail Lamp Assembly

  • Use both hands to pull the tail lamp straight rearward, away from the body.
  • If it feels stuck, use a plastic trim removal tool gently between the lamp and body edge.
  • The lamp has plastic guide pins. Pull straight back so they do not snap.
  • Do not pull the lamp far away from the vehicle because the wiring is still connected.

Step 4: Remove the Turn Signal Bulb Socket

  • Look at the back of the tail lamp assembly and find the rear turn signal bulb socket.
  • Use your gloved hand to turn the bulb socket counterclockwise about a quarter turn.
  • Pull the socket straight out of the lamp housing.
  • A bulb socket is the small plastic holder that locks the bulb into the lamp.

Step 5: Replace the Bulb

  • Use clean nitrile gloves to pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
  • Push the new rear turn signal bulb straight into the socket until it seats fully.
  • Do not twist the glass bulb unless the bulb design requires it. On this style, it normally pulls straight out and pushes straight in.
  • Never touch bulb glass with bare fingers.

Step 6: Reinstall the Bulb Socket

  • Use your gloved hand to insert the socket back into the tail lamp housing.
  • Turn the socket clockwise about a quarter turn until it locks.
  • Lightly tug the socket to make sure it is secure.

Step 7: Test the Turn Signal Before Reassembly

  • Use your hand to switch the ignition to ON without starting the engine.
  • Turn on the left or right turn signal for the side you repaired.
  • Confirm the new rear turn signal flashes normally.
  • Turn the ignition and turn signal back off after testing.

Step 8: Reinstall the Tail Lamp Assembly

  • Align the tail lamp guide pins with the body holes by hand.
  • Push the lamp straight forward until it sits flush with the body.
  • Use a 10mm socket and 1/4-inch drive ratchet to reinstall the two mounting bolts.
  • Tighten snugly by hand with the ratchet. Do not overtighten because the lamp housing is plastic.
  • Torque to 5.0 Nm (44 in-lbs)

Step 9: Final Function Check

  • Use your hand to turn the ignition to ON.
  • Check the repaired turn signal again.
  • Turn on the hazard lights and confirm both rear turn signals flash evenly.
  • Close the liftgate when finished.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Make sure the turn signal flashes at normal speed. A fast flash usually means a bulb is still out or not seated correctly.
  • ✅ Check that the tail lamp sits flush and does not rattle.
  • ✅ No scan tool, programming, or infotainment reset is needed for this repair.
  • ✅ Dispose of the old bulb safely because thin glass can break easily.
