1500 - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement 💡

Nice and beginner-friendly job on your 1500. I’ll walk you through it step by step.

Parts & Bulb Type 📦

  • 💡 Rear turn signal bulb (each side): 3157A (amber) dual-filament bulb (Ram spec for your tail lamp style)
  • 💡 Quantity: Replace in pairs (left and right) so brightness and color match

Note: If you find a different bulb number printed on your old bulb, match that number.

Tools You’ll Need 🧰

  • 🔧 T25 Torx screwdriver or bit (star-shaped screw driver)
  • 🔧 Ratchet with Torx bit (optional, makes it easier if screws are tight)
  • 🧤 Clean gloves (keeps oils from your skin off the bulb glass)
  • 🪜 Small step stool (optional, if you want easier access)

Safety First ⚠️

  • 🛑 Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and put the transmission in PARK.
  • 🔌 Turn ignition OFF and switch off the lights and turn signals.
  • 🧤 Let the bulbs cool for a few minutes if they were just on; they can be hot.

Step 1 – Open the Tailgate 🚪

  • 📍 Lower the tailgate fully. This exposes the screws that hold the tail lamp on each side.

Step 2 – Remove Tail Lamp Screws 🔩

  • 🔧 On the side of the lamp (facing the tailgate opening), locate the two vertical Torx screws (one near the top, one near the bottom).
  • 🔧 Use the T25 Torx screwdriver to remove both screws completely.
    • Keep the screws in a safe place; you’ll reuse them.

Step 3 – Remove the Tail Lamp Assembly 🧱

  • ✋ Hold the tail lamp with one hand so it doesn’t fall.
  • ➡️ Gently pull the lamp straight back away from the truck. It’s held by plastic alignment pins that pop out of rubber grommets.
    • If it’s stuck, wiggle it side-to-side while pulling straight back. Do not pry with a screwdriver on the paint.

Step 4 – Find the Rear Turn Signal Socket 💡

  • 👀 On the back of the lamp, you’ll see multiple bulb sockets:
    • Top: usually tail/stop lamp
    • Middle: rear turn signal (amber bulb on your truck)
    • Bottom: reverse (white/clear)
  • 🔎 The turn signal socket is typically the middle socket with an amber bulb inside.

Step 5 – Remove the Turn Signal Bulb 🔁

  • 🔧 Grip the turn signal socket and rotate it about ¼ turn counterclockwise (left) to unlock it.
  • 📤 Pull the socket straight out of the lamp housing.
  • 💡 Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket. It may be snug; wiggle gently while pulling.

Step 6 – Install the New Bulb ✅

  • 🧤 Put on clean gloves or hold the bulb with a clean cloth. Skin oil can shorten bulb life.
  • 💡 Push the new 3157A amber bulb straight into the socket until it’s fully seated.
  • 🔁 Align the socket tabs with the slots in the lamp housing, insert the socket, and turn it ¼ turn clockwise (right) to lock it.

Step 7 – Test the Turn Signal 🔄

  • 🚚 Temporarily hold the lamp in place (don’t install screws yet).
  • 🔑 Turn ignition to RUN (engine can be off).
  • ➡️ Turn on the left or right turn signal for the side you just worked on.
  • 👀 Confirm the new bulb flashes normally (not too fast, not dim).
  • 🔌 Turn ignition and signals back OFF.

Step 8 – Reinstall the Tail Lamp 🔙

  • 📐 Line up the alignment pins on the back of the lamp with the holes in the truck body.
  • ✋ Press the lamp straight in until it sits flush with the body.
  • 🔧 Reinstall the two T25 Torx screws and snug them down.
    • Torque spec is low, about 20–25 in-lbs (2–3 N·m) – just snug, not gorilla tight so you don’t crack the plastic.
  • 🔁 Repeat the same steps on the other side so both turn signals match.

Final Check ✅

  • 💡 Test:
    • Left and right turn signals
    • Hazard lights
    • Brake lights and reverse lights (just to be sure nothing got disturbed)

If you tell me whether your rear lenses are red or red/amber combo, I can confirm the exact bulb position again, but the steps above are correct for your 1500.
