🔧 Sentra - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
Your Sentra’s rear turn signals are standard replaceable bulbs inside the tail lamp housing. The job is mostly done from inside the trunk by removing a small access cover, then twisting out the bulb socket.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the lights OFF and remove the key before starting.
- ⚠️ Let bulbs cool; they can get hot.
- ⚠️ Don’t touch the new bulb glass with bare fingers (skin oil can shorten bulb life).
- ⚠️ Support the trunk lid securely so it can’t drop while you work.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 10mm socket
- 1/4" drive ratchet
- 6" extension (1/4" drive)
- Plastic trim removal tool
- Small flathead screwdriver
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Flashlight

- Rear turn signal bulb (amber, 7440A/7440NA) - Qty: 2
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Open the trunk and remove any cargo so you can see the trunk side lining.
- Tip: Replace both sides so color matches.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Access the tail lamp from inside the trunk
- Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
- Use a flashlight to find the trunk-side access cover behind the tail lamp.
- Remove the cover using a plastic trim removal tool (a plastic pry tool that pops clips without scratching).
Step 2: Remove the rear turn signal bulb socket
- Find the turn signal bulb socket on the tail lamp (it will twist into the housing).
- Grip the socket and rotate it counterclockwise about 1/4 turn to unlock it.
- Pull the socket straight out.
Step 3: Replace the bulb
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket (it’s a push-in style).
- Install the new 7440A/7440NA amber bulb by pushing it straight in until fully seated.
- Tip: Use gloves to avoid touching glass.
Step 4: Reinstall the socket
- Insert the socket back into the tail lamp.
- Rotate clockwise about 1/4 turn until it locks.
Step 5: If the socket won’t come out (alternate method: remove the tail lamp)
- If access is tight, remove the tail lamp fasteners inside the trunk using a 10mm socket, 1/4" drive ratchet, and 6" extension.
- Carefully pull the tail lamp straight rearward to release the locating pins.
- If a clip is stubborn, use a plastic trim removal tool to gently help it release.
- Twist out the turn signal socket, replace the bulb, then reinstall the lamp.
- Reinstall and snug the 10mm nuts using a 10mm socket and ratchet (do not over-tighten; the lamp housing can crack).
Step 6: Repeat on the other side
- Do the same steps on the opposite tail lamp.
✅ After Repair
- Turn the ignition to ON and test left and right rear turn signals.
- Confirm the flash rate is normal (a fast flash usually means a bulb isn’t seated or is the wrong type).
- Make sure all trunk trim/access covers are fully clipped back in place.
