How to Replace Rear Turn Signal Bulbs on a 2015 Nissan Rogue
Step-by-step DIY bulb replacement guide with tools, parts, safety tips, and cost savings

🔧 Rogue - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
You’ll be replacing the rear turn signal bulbs inside the tail light housings on your Rogue. The bulbs are accessed from inside the cargo area by removing a small trim cover, then twisting the bulb socket out of the lamp.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 20-30 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🔸Always switch the ignition OFF and remove the key before working on lights to avoid short circuits.
- 🔸Let the bulbs cool for a few minutes if they were just on; they can get hot.
- 🔸Do not touch the glass of new bulbs with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life.
- 🔸Set the parking brake and make sure the gear selector is in Park so the vehicle cannot move.
- 🔸Battery disconnect is not required for this job, but avoid turning lights on while sockets are loose.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 🔸Trim removal tool (plastic)
- 🔸Flathead screwdriver (small)
- 🔸Ratchet handle 1/4"
- 🔸10mm socket
- 🔸Work light or flashlight
- 🔸Mechanic gloves
- 🔸Safety glasses

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

- 🔸Replacement tail lamp mounting clips - Qty: 2-4 If any break
- 🔸Dielectric grease (for bulb contacts) - Qty: 1 small tube
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- 🔸Park the Rogue on level ground, set the parking brake, and move the shifter to Park.
- 🔸Turn the ignition OFF and make sure the headlight switch and hazard lights are OFF.
- 🔸Open the rear liftgate to access the inner trim panels beside each tail light.
- 🔸Clear out any cargo so you can easily reach the side panels in the cargo area.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Access the inside of the tail light area
- 🔸Open the liftgate fully so it stays up on its own.
- 🔸On the side where you’re replacing the bulb, look at the interior side trim at the very rear corner; you’ll see a small rectangular plastic access cover near the tail light area.
- 🔸Use the trim removal tool (plastic) or a flathead screwdriver (small) wrapped with a cloth to gently pry off the access cover. Pry from the notch side
Step 2: Locate the rear turn signal bulb socket
- 🔸Shine your work light or flashlight into the opening.
- 🔸Inside, you’ll see several bulb sockets going into the tail lamp housing. The turn signal socket on the Rogue is usually the lower of the two larger sockets toward the outer rear of the vehicle.
- 🔸The socket will have two wires going into it and is held in by tabs that twist into the lamp.
Step 3: Remove the bulb socket from the tail lamp
- 🔸Grip the turn signal bulb socket firmly with your hand.
- 🔸Rotate the socket about a quarter-turn counterclockwise by hand. No tools needed here.
- 🔸Pull the socket straight out of the tail lamp housing once it unlocks.
Step 4: Remove the old bulb
- 🔸Hold the socket so you can see the bulb clearly.
- 🔸Grasp the old 7440 amber bulb with your fingers (wear mechanic gloves if it might still be warm).
- 🔸Pull the bulb straight out of the socket; it’s a push-in (wedge) style, so no twisting is needed.
- 🔸If it feels stuck, gently rock it side to side while pulling.
Step 5: Install the new bulb
- 🔸If you have dielectric grease, apply a tiny dab to the metal contacts inside the socket. This helps prevent corrosion.
- 🔸Take the new 7440 amber bulb and avoid touching the glass with your bare fingers; hold it by the base.
- 🔸Push the new bulb straight into the socket until it is fully seated and snug.
Step 6: Test the new bulb before reassembly
- 🔸Let the socket hang safely where it won’t touch any moving parts or metal edges.
- 🔸Turn the ignition to ON (engine not necessary) and activate the turn signal for that side or the hazard lights.
- 🔸Check from behind the Rogue to confirm the new bulb is flashing normally.
- 🔸Turn the ignition OFF and switch off the turn signal/hazards before continuing.
Step 7: Reinstall the bulb socket into the tail lamp
- 🔸Align the tabs on the bulb socket with the openings in the tail lamp housing.
- 🔸Insert the socket straight into the housing.
- 🔸Rotate the socket a quarter-turn clockwise by hand until it stops. It should feel snug and secure. No torque spec here; just hand-tight.
Step 8: Refit the interior access cover
- 🔸Line up the interior plastic access cover with its opening in the trim.
- 🔸Press it firmly until all its clips snap back into place.
- 🔸If a clip is broken and the cover will not stay, replace with a replacement tail lamp mounting clip using a 10mm socket and ratchet handle 1/4" as needed to remove and refit nearby fasteners. Most users won’t need this
Step 9: Repeat on the other side
- 🔸Repeat Steps 1–8 on the other side, even if that bulb has not failed yet.
- 🔸Bulbs of the same age often fail close together, so replacing both saves time later.
âś… After Repair
- 🔸Turn the ignition ON and test both rear turn signals and hazard lights from outside the vehicle.
- 🔸Check that the flash rate is normal (not very fast), which would indicate a burned-out bulb.
- 🔸Verify that the tail lights and brake lights still work normally after you handled the sockets.
- 🔸Make sure all interior trim covers are properly seated and there are no rattles when you close the liftgate.
