🔧 Forte - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

Your Forte’s rear turn signal bulbs sit inside the tail lamp housing and are accessed from inside the trunk. The job is mostly “twist-and-remove,” then swap the bulb and test the lights.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.7 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and switch all exterior lights OFF before starting.
  • ⚠️ Let the bulbs cool first; they can get hot and burn you.
  • ⚠️ Don’t touch the glass of a bulb with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life.
  • ⚠️ Support the trunk lid securely so it can’t drop while you’re working.
  • 🔋 Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight
  • Trim panel tool (plastic) (specialty)
  • Small flathead screwdriver

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear turn signal bulb (amber) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2

Assumption: Bulb type can vary by housing; match the new bulb to the old bulb you remove (same base and shape).

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • 🧰 Open the trunk and remove any cargo so you can see the trunk side panels clearly.
  • 🔦 Have your flashlight ready; the bulb access area is dim.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Access the tail lamp from inside the trunk

  • Use your flashlight to locate the rear corner of the trunk (left side for driver-side lamp, right side for passenger-side lamp).
  • Look for a small interior access cover/flap in the trunk liner behind the tail lamp area.
  • If clips are holding the liner, use a trim panel tool (plastic) (specialty) to gently pry the push-clips out.
  • If a clip is stubborn, use a small flathead screwdriver carefully to lift the clip center, then pull the clip out.
  • Tip: Pry slowly to avoid cracking clips.

Step 2: Identify the turn signal bulb socket

  • With the access opened, use the flashlight to find the bulb sockets going into the tail lamp.
  • The turn signal socket is typically the one leading to the amber turn signal section (if your lens has an amber area) or the dedicated turn position in the housing.
  • Wear nitrile gloves and safety glasses before handling the bulb and socket.

Step 3: Remove the bulb socket

  • Grip the socket firmly and rotate it counterclockwise about 1/4 turn by hand.
  • Pull the socket straight out of the tail lamp housing.
  • If it’s tight, wiggle gently while pulling—don’t yank on the wiring.

Step 4: Remove the old bulb

  • Use nitrile gloves to handle the bulb.
  • If the bulb is a wedge type, pull it straight out of the socket.
  • If the bulb has metal pins and a round base, press in slightly and twist counterclockwise to release it, then pull it out.
  • Use the flashlight to compare the old bulb’s base to your replacement so you install the correct style.

Step 5: Install the new bulb

  • Install the new bulb into the socket (push-in for wedge style, or press-and-twist clockwise for pin-base style).
  • Make sure it seats fully and feels secure (no wobble).
  • Tip: Don’t touch bulb glass with bare skin.

Step 6: Reinstall the socket into the tail lamp

  • Insert the socket back into the housing, lining up the tabs.
  • Twist clockwise about 1/4 turn until it locks in place.

Step 7: Test the turn signal before reassembling trim

  • Turn the ignition to ON.
  • Turn on the left and right turn signals (and hazards) and confirm the rear turn signal flashes correctly.
  • If it doesn’t work, turn ignition OFF, remove the socket again, and re-seat the bulb firmly.

Step 8: Reinstall the trunk liner/access cover

  • Reposition the trunk liner.
  • Press the clips back in by hand; if needed, use the trim panel tool (plastic) (specialty) to align them first.
  • If you lifted a clip center with a small flathead screwdriver, push the center pin back down to lock the clip.

âś… After Repair

  • 🧪 Re-test both rear turn signals and hazards with the trunk closed.
  • đź‘€ Walk around the car and confirm the flash rate looks normal (not fast).
  • 🧹 Put the old bulbs aside and recycle them if your local parts store accepts them.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $60-$140 (parts + labor)
