🔧 Civic - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

Your Civic’s rear turn signals are simple to service from inside the trunk. You’ll open the trunk, access the taillight bulb socket, and swap the bulb without removing the whole taillight.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.7 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🛑 Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key before starting.
  • 🛑 Let the bulbs cool for a few minutes; they can get hot.
  • 🛑 Wear gloves; skin oils can shorten bulb life.
  • 🛑 Don’t force plastic trim; it can crack in cold weather.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Plastic trim removal tool
  • Small flathead screwdriver
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear turn signal bulb (7440 amber) - Qty: 2

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the trunk and remove any cargo so you can reach the trunk side liners.
  • Replace bulbs in pairs for even brightness.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Access the taillight service opening

  • Use a flashlight to find the access cover in the trunk side liner behind the taillight.
  • If there’s a small cover, pry it open gently with a plastic trim removal tool.
  • If there are push-pins/clips, lift the center carefully with a small flathead screwdriver, then pull the clip out with the plastic trim removal tool.

Step 2: Remove the rear turn signal bulb socket

  • Reach through the opening and locate the turn signal bulb socket on the back of the taillight.
  • Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand to unlock it, then pull it straight out.
  • Socket won’t turn? Wiggle gently, don’t force.

Step 3: Replace the bulb

  • Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket (it’s a push-in style).
  • Push the new rear turn signal bulb (7440 amber) straight into the socket until fully seated.
  • Don’t touch the bulb glass with bare fingers.

Step 4: Reinstall the socket and close up

  • Insert the socket back into the taillight and twist clockwise by hand until it locks.
  • Reinstall the access cover and any clips using the plastic trim removal tool as needed.

Step 5: Repeat on the other side

  • Do the same procedure on the opposite rear taillight so both turn signals match.

âś… After Repair

  • Turn the ignition ON and test both rear turn signals and hazard lights.
  • Walk behind the car and confirm the blink rate is normal on both sides.
  • If a bulb doesn’t work, remove the socket and re-seat the bulb firmly, then re-test.
