🔧 Cruze - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

Your Cruze’s rear turn signal bulbs sit inside the outer tail lamp housings. Replacement is straightforward: access the back of the tail lamp from inside the trunk, remove the bulb socket, and swap the bulb.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🔸 Turn ignition OFF and remove the key before starting.
  • 🔸 Let the tail lamps cool if they were recently on.
  • 🔸 Don’t touch the new bulb glass with bare fingers; oils can shorten bulb life.
  • 🔸 Support the tail lamp as you remove it to avoid scratching paint.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" ratchet
  • 6" extension (1/4")
  • Plastic trim removal tool
  • Small flathead screwdriver
  • Flashlight
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear turn signal bulb (amber, 7440A-type) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the trunk and remove any cargo so you can work comfortably.
  • Keep a towel handy to protect paint.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Access the tail lamp fasteners (inside trunk)

  • Use a flashlight to locate the trunk side liner behind the tail lamp area.
  • Use a plastic trim removal tool to pop out the liner clips (a trim tool is a non-metal pry tool that helps prevent scratches).
  • If a clip is stubborn, carefully assist with a small flathead screwdriver.

Step 2: Remove the tail lamp assembly

  • Use a 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 6" extension (1/4") to remove the tail lamp retaining nuts.
  • Support the tail lamp with your other hand and gently pull the tail lamp straight rearward.
  • If it feels stuck, wiggle gently—do not pry against painted surfaces with metal tools.
  • Torque to 3 Nm (27 in-lbs) when reinstalling the 10mm nuts. Snug only—don’t crack the lamp.

Step 3: Remove the rear turn signal bulb socket

  • On the back of the tail lamp, identify the turn signal socket (the socket that aligns with the amber section of the lens).
  • Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand to unlock it, then pull it out.

Step 4: Replace the bulb

  • Put on nitrile gloves to keep oils off the bulb.
  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket by hand.
  • Install the new rear turn signal bulb (amber, 7440A-type) by pushing it straight into the socket until fully seated.

Step 5: Reinstall socket and tail lamp

  • Reinsert the socket into the tail lamp and twist clockwise by hand until it locks.
  • Position the tail lamp on the body and align the guide pins.
  • Install the retaining nuts using the 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 6" extension (1/4"), then Torque to 3 Nm (27 in-lbs).
  • Reinstall the trunk liner and clips using the plastic trim removal tool.

Step 6: Repeat on the other side

  • Use the same steps for the opposite rear tail lamp.
  • Replacing both keeps brightness and color matched.

âś… After Repair

  • Turn ignition ON and test: left turn, right turn, and hazard flashers.
  • Walk behind the Cruze to confirm blink rate is normal (fast blinking usually means a bulb isn’t working).
  • Check that the tail lamp sits flush and no trunk liner is pinched.
  • If you see moisture later, recheck the socket is fully locked and the lamp is seated evenly.
