šŸ”§ Suburban - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

Your Suburban’s rear turn signal bulb is accessed from the rear tail lamp assembly. The job is mostly removing the tail lamp, swapping the bulb, and reinstalling everything so the lamp seals properly (keeps moisture out).

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.
  • āš ļø Let the lamps cool before touching bulbs (they get hot).
  • āš ļø Don’t touch the glass part of an incandescent bulb with bare fingers (oil can shorten bulb life).
  • āš ļø Support the tail lamp while unplugging it so it doesn’t fall and crack.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Trim removal tool (plastic)
  • Torx T15 screwdriver
  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4" ratchet
  • 6" extension for 1/4" ratchet
  • Torque wrench (in-lb)
  • Clean shop towel

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear turn signal bulb (match the number from your old bulb) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2
  • Dielectric grease (optional) - Qty: 1

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the liftgate so you can access the inboard edge of the tail lamp.
  • A trim removal tool is a plastic pry tool used to pop clips without scratching paint.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm you have a replaceable bulb

  • Turn the ignition ON and activate the hazards to confirm which rear turn signal is out, then turn ignition OFF.
  • If your rear turn signal is an LED (no bulb socket that twists out), you may need a lamp assembly repair instead of a bulb.

Step 2: Remove the tail lamp retaining fasteners

  • At the inboard edge of the tail lamp (visible with liftgate open), remove the two retaining screws.
  • Use a Torx T15 screwdriver if the screws are Torx.
  • If yours are hex-head instead, use a 10mm socket with a 1/4" ratchet and 6" extension for 1/4" ratchet.
  • Keep the screws in a cup.

Step 3: Pull the tail lamp assembly straight back

  • Grip the lamp and pull straight rearward (toward you). It’s held by alignment pins/grommets.
  • If it’s stuck, use a trim removal tool (plastic) to gently help it release—do not pry against painted edges.
  • Support the lamp so it doesn’t hang by the wiring.

Step 4: Remove the rear turn signal bulb socket

  • Locate the turn signal bulb socket on the back of the lamp housing.
  • Twist the socket counterclockwise about 1/4 turn and pull it out.

Step 5: Replace the bulb

  • Wear nitrile gloves and pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
  • Install the new bulb by pushing it straight in until fully seated.
  • If you have it, apply a tiny amount of dielectric grease to the socket seal (not on the bulb glass).

Step 6: Reinstall the bulb socket and tail lamp

  • Insert the socket into the housing and twist clockwise to lock.
  • Align the lamp’s guide pins with the body grommets, then push the lamp straight in until fully seated and flush.
  • Reinstall the two retaining screws using a Torx T15 screwdriver or 10mm socket (whichever matches yours).
  • Torque to 22 in-lbs (2.5 Nm) using a torque wrench (in-lb).

Step 7: Repeat on the other side (recommended)

  • Replace the other rear turn signal bulb so both sides match brightness and age.

āœ… After Repair

  • Turn ignition ON and test: left turn, right turn, and hazards.
  • Confirm the tail lamp sits flush all around (prevents water intrusion).
  • If the turn signal flashes fast, recheck the bulb seating and confirm you installed the correct bulb type.

šŸ’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $60-$150 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $10-$40 (parts only)

You Save: $50-$110 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5-1.0 hours.

Quick question (so I match your exact setup): When you remove the tail lamp, do you see a twist-out bulb socket for the rear turn signal, or does it look like an LED module with no removable bulb?
