🔧 Renegade - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
The rear turn signal bulb is inside the tail lamp assembly. The job is mostly gaining access, removing the lamp, swapping the bulb, then confirming the signal flashes normally.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.8 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn ignition OFF and remove the key before starting.
- ⚠️ Let the bulbs cool before touching the socket.
- ⚠️ Don’t touch a new bulb’s glass with bare fingers; oils can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ Support the tail lamp so it doesn’t hang by the wiring.

📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Open the liftgate for access to the tail lamp fasteners.
- Lay a towel on the bumper edge to prevent scratches while you handle the lamp.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Confirm which fasteners your tail lamp uses
- Open the liftgate and look at the inner edge of the tail lamp.
- If you see screw heads, use a Torx T30 screwdriver for removal.
- If you see nuts on studs (usually behind small access points), use a 10mm socket, 1/4" drive ratchet, and 6" extension (1/4" drive).
Step 2: Remove the tail lamp fasteners
- Remove the two fasteners using either the Torx T30 screwdriver or 10mm socket setup.
- Set the fasteners somewhere safe so they don’t fall into the body openings.
Step 3: Release the tail lamp from the body clips
- Grip the tail lamp with both hands and pull it straight rearward (away from the vehicle).
- If it’s stuck, gently work a trim removal tool (plastic) (specialty) between the lamp and body and pry lightly.
- Tip: Pull straight back, not sideways.
Step 4: Remove the turn signal bulb socket
- Support the lamp with one hand.
- Turn the correct bulb socket counterclockwise about 1/4 turn and pull it out.
- Use a flashlight to identify the turn signal socket if needed (it’s the one that feeds the amber flash).
Step 5: Replace the bulb
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket (no twisting on most wedge-style bulbs).
- Install the new bulb fully into the socket using nitrile gloves.
- If the bulb is a twist-lock style on your lamp, turn it clockwise to lock (hand-tight only).
Step 6: Test before reassembly
- Temporarily hold the socket in place and turn the ignition ON.
- Switch on the rear turn signal for that side and verify it flashes normally.
- If it “hyperflashes” (very fast), remove the bulb and re-seat it firmly.
- Turn ignition OFF again after testing.
Step 7: Reinstall the socket and tail lamp
- Reinsert the bulb socket and turn clockwise to lock (hand-tight).
- Align the tail lamp locating pins/clips with the body holes, then push the lamp straight in until it seats flush.
- Reinstall the two fasteners using the Torx T30 screwdriver or 10mm socket.
- Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs)
Step 8: Repeat on the other side (recommended)
- Repeat the same steps for the opposite rear turn signal.
- Tip: Replace bulbs in pairs for even brightness.
✅ After Repair
- Verify left and right rear turn signals, hazards, and brake lights all work normally.
- Check that the tail lamp sits flush with even panel gaps.
- Take a short drive and re-check for any warning messages or fast-flash.
