🔧 Rear Turn Signal Bulbs - Bulb Replacement

Replacing the rear turn signal bulbs on your F-150 means removing the tail lamp assembly, swapping the bulb, and reinstalling everything cleanly. This is a simple repair, but the lamp housing and retaining fasteners need to be handled carefully so you do not crack the lens or damage the wiring.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Turn the lights off and let the bulbs cool before touching them.
  • Use care around the tail lamp lens; it can crack if forced.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable if you will be working near exposed wiring or if the bulb socket is stuck and you need extra leverage.
  • Do not touch a halogen bulb glass with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 8mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • Short extension
  • Trim panel tool
  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear turn signal bulb - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Shift into Park.
  • Turn the ignition off and switch the exterior lights off.
  • If your truck has a tonneau cover or bed liner piece blocking tail lamp access, move it out of the way first.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the tailgate

  • Lower the tailgate fully so you can access the rear of the tail lamp assembly.

Step 2: Remove the tail lamp fasteners

  • Use an 8mm socket with a ratchet and short extension to remove the two tail lamp retaining bolts.
  • Set the bolts aside where they will not roll away.

Step 3: Release the tail lamp assembly

  • Carefully pull the tail lamp straight rearward to release the locating pins.
  • If it sticks, use a trim panel tool gently at the edge.
  • Do not pry on the lens hard.

Step 4: Disconnect and access the bulb socket

  • Twist the rear turn signal bulb socket counterclockwise by hand and remove it from the lamp housing.
  • If the socket is tight, use a gloved hand for better grip.

Step 5: Replace the bulb

  • Remove the old bulb from the socket and install the new rear turn signal bulb.
  • Make sure the bulb is fully seated in the socket.

Step 6: Reinstall the socket and lamp

  • Insert the socket back into the tail lamp housing and twist it clockwise until it locks.
  • Align the lamp assembly with the body openings and press it into place.
  • Reinstall the two 8mm bolts and tighten them snugly. Torque to 4-5 Nm (35-44 in-lbs).

Step 7: Test the new bulb

  • Turn on the ignition and activate the left and right turn signals one at a time.
  • Check that both rear turn signals flash normally.
  • Also verify the brake light and tail light still work on that side.

✅ After Repair

  • Walk behind the truck and confirm both rear signals blink at the correct rate.
  • If the bulb does not light, remove the socket and confirm the bulb is seated fully.
  • If the bulb still does not work, check the fuse and socket terminals for corrosion.
