How to Replace Rear Turn Signal Bulbs on a 2014 Nissan Rogue
Step-by-step DIY guide with tools, parts list, safety tips, and testing instructions to change both rear turn signal bulbs

🔧 Rogue - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
You’ll be replacing the rear turn signal bulbs in the tail light housings on your Rogue. The bulbs twist out from behind the trim in the cargo area, so you don’t need to remove the whole tail light.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 20–30 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🔸Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key to prevent electrical shorts.
- 🔸Make sure the turn signals are OFF and have cooled down so the bulbs and housing are not hot.
- 🔸Keep glass bulbs clean; oil from your skin can shorten bulb life—wear clean gloves.
- 🔸Work in a well-lit area and set the parking brake so the Rogue cannot roll.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 🔸Plastic trim removal tool set (specialty)
- 🔸Flathead screwdriver 4 mm
- 🔸Work light or flashlight
- 🔸Clean nitrile or latex gloves
- 🔸Safety glasses

đź“‹ Before You Begin
- 🔸Park the Rogue on level ground, set the parking brake, and turn the ignition OFF.
- 🔸Open the rear liftgate fully and clear the cargo area so you can reach the side panels.
- 🔸Put on safety glasses and gloves before handling tools and bulbs.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open cargo area and locate access panels
- 🔸Open the rear liftgate of your Rogue all the way.
- 🔸Look at the interior side trim panels, directly behind each tail light (left and right rear corners).
- 🔸Find the small removable plastic access cover near the outer corner of each side panel; this is where you reach the bulb.
Step 2: Remove the interior access cover
- 🔸Use a plastic trim removal tool set to gently pry up one edge of the plastic access cover.
- 🔸If needed, use the tip of a flathead screwdriver 4 mm wrapped in a cloth to help lift the cover without scratching.
- 🔸Pull the access cover out and set it aside in a safe spot.
- Pry slowly to avoid cracking the cover
Step 3: Identify the rear turn signal bulb socket
- 🔸Shine your work light or flashlight into the opening.
- 🔸You will see multiple bulb sockets on the back of the tail light assembly.
- 🔸On the Rogue, the rear turn signal socket is usually the larger socket toward the outer side of the lamp, with an amber-colored bulb inside.
- If unsure, have a helper briefly turn on the signal
Step 4: Remove the turn signal bulb socket
- 🔸Grip the turn signal bulb socket firmly with your hand.
- 🔸Twist the socket about a quarter-turn counterclockwise (left) to unlock it.
- 🔸Pull the socket straight out of the tail light housing.
- Do not pull hard on the wiring
Step 5: Remove the old bulb
- 🔸Hold the socket in one hand and the bulb base in the other.
- 🔸Pull the bulb straight out of the socket; it may be snug but should come out with a firm pull.
- 🔸If the bulb glass broke, carefully remove any glass pieces while wearing safety glasses and gloves.
- Wiggle gently if the bulb feels stuck
Step 6: Install the new bulb
- 🔸Apply a very thin film of dielectric grease to the metal contacts inside the socket, if available.
- 🔸With clean nitrile or latex gloves on, align the new rear turn signal bulb (amber, 7440 type) with the socket opening.
- 🔸Push the bulb straight into the socket until it clicks or feels fully seated.
- Do not touch bulb glass with bare fingers
Step 7: Reinstall the socket into the tail light
- 🔸Align the tabs on the bulb socket with the slots in the tail light housing.
- 🔸Insert the socket straight into the opening.
- 🔸Twist the socket a quarter-turn clockwise (right) until it locks firmly in place.
- Make sure socket is fully seated to prevent moisture
Step 8: Test the new bulb
- 🔸Have a helper sit in the driver’s seat and turn the ignition to ON (engine can stay off).
- 🔸Turn on the left or right turn signal for the side you just replaced.
- 🔸Check from behind the Rogue that the new bulb flashes normally and at normal speed.
- 🔸If it does not light, turn the signal off, remove the socket again, and check that the bulb is fully pushed in and the socket is firmly locked into the housing.
Step 9: Reinstall the interior access cover
- 🔸Once the bulb works correctly, line up the interior access cover with the opening.
- 🔸Press it back into place until all edges snap in flush with the trim.
- 🔸Repeat Steps 2–9 on the other side to replace the second rear turn signal bulb.
- Always replace both sides to keep brightness even
âś… After Repair
- 🔸Turn the ignition ON and test left and right rear turn signals, hazard lights, and brake lights to ensure all rear lamps work properly.
- 🔸Walk around the vehicle to confirm both sides flash at the same rate and brightness.
- 🔸Check that all trim covers are securely seated and no wiring is pinched or exposed in the cargo area.
- 🔸Take a short drive and use the signals to be sure everything is functioning normally.
