🔧 Grand Cherokee - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
On your Grand Cherokee, the rear turn signal is accessed from the tail lamp assembly. Most trims use a replaceable bulb, but some tail lamps are LED and require replacing the entire lamp assembly.
Before I lock in the exact bulb type and torque specs, answer these 2 quick questions: (1) Are your rear turn signals amber or do they flash the red brake light? (2) Do you see any “LED” marking on the tail lamp, or do the lights look like a solid LED strip (no visible bulbs)?
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🛑 Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- 🧤 Let the tail lamps cool before touching; bulbs can be hot.
- ⚡ Turn ignition OFF and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.
- 🪛 Use plastic trim tools to avoid paint scratches.
- 🔋 Battery disconnect is not required for this job.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 10mm socket
- 1/4" ratchet
- 6" socket extension
- Plastic trim removal tool set
- Small flat-blade screwdriver
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Flashlight
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Rear turn signal bulb - Qty: 1 (Replace in pairs recommended)
- Dielectric grease - Qty: 1
- Tail lamp assembly - Qty: 1 (only if your rear turn signal is LED/non-serviceable)
📋 Before You Begin
- 🚗 Verify which side you’re replacing (left = driver side, right = passenger side).
- 🔦 Turn on the hazard lights briefly to confirm which section is the rear turn signal, then turn everything OFF.
- 🧼 Put on nitrile gloves to keep skin oils off the bulb glass.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open access to the tail lamp fasteners
- Open the liftgate.
- Use a flashlight to locate the tail lamp fasteners on the inboard edge of the lamp (the side closest to the liftgate opening).
Step 2: Remove the tail lamp fasteners
- Use a 10mm socket, 6" extension, and 1/4" ratchet to remove the tail lamp retaining nuts/bolts.
- Set the fasteners somewhere safe so they don’t fall into the body cavity.
- Tip: Turn counterclockwise slowly to avoid dropping hardware.
Step 3: Release the tail lamp from the body
- Gently pull the tail lamp straight rearward (toward you).
- If it feels stuck, use a plastic trim removal tool set to gently work around the edges—do not pry hard on painted surfaces.
- Torque note: I’ll provide the exact reinstall torque once you confirm whether your lamp is bulb-type or LED-type (hardware differs).
Step 4: Identify whether your turn signal is a replaceable bulb or LED
- Look at the back of the tail lamp for a removable bulb socket (it will twist out) or a sealed LED module.
- If you see a twist-lock socket: follow Path A below.
- If there is no socket and the unit looks sealed: follow Path B below.
Step 5A (Path A): Remove the turn signal bulb socket
- Locate the socket that corresponds to the turn signal section you confirmed earlier.
- Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand, then pull it out.
- If it’s tight, use a small flat-blade screwdriver carefully to assist at the socket tabs (gentle pressure only).
Step 6A (Path A): Replace the bulb
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket (some bulbs need a slight wiggle).
- Check the bulb number printed on the base, and match it to your new bulb.
- Install the new bulb by pushing it straight into the socket until fully seated.
- Apply a tiny amount of dielectric grease to the socket seal (not on the bulb glass).
Step 7A (Path A): Reinstall the bulb socket
- Insert the socket into the housing and twist clockwise until it locks.
- Do a quick tug to confirm it’s fully locked in place.
Step 5B (Path B): Replace the tail lamp assembly (LED type)
- Disconnect the tail lamp electrical connector by pressing the lock tab and pulling it apart by hand.
- Install the replacement tail lamp assembly and reconnect the electrical connector until it clicks.
- Torque note: I’ll provide the exact fastener torque once you confirm the lamp style and which fasteners you have (nuts vs bolts).
Step 8: Reinstall the tail lamp
- Align the tail lamp locating pins with the body holes and push the lamp straight in.
- Reinstall the fasteners using a 10mm socket, 6" extension, and 1/4" ratchet.
- Tighten evenly (do not over-tighten; the housing can crack).
✅ After Repair
- 🔁 Turn the ignition ON and test the repaired side turn signal, hazards, brake lights, and running lights.
- 👂 Listen/observe for fast “hyper-flash.” If it flashes fast, the bulb type may be incorrect or not seated fully.
- 💧 If you notice moisture later, recheck the socket seal and lamp seating.
