🔧 Durango - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

Your Durango’s rear turn signal bulb sits inside the rear tail light assembly. Replacement is usually quick: you remove the tail lamp, twist the bulb socket out, swap the bulb, then reinstall everything.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.7 hours

Assumption: Your Durango uses a conventional bulb (not LED) for the rear turn signal.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🛑 Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • ⚠️ Turn lights OFF and let bulbs cool; they can get hot.
  • 🧤 Wear gloves; oil from skin can shorten bulb life.
  • 🔋 Battery disconnect is not required for this bulb swap.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Phillips #2 screwdriver
  • Plastic trim removal tool
  • Small flashlight
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear turn signal bulb (3157 type) - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Open the liftgate to access the tail lamp fasteners on the inside edge.
  • Turn the hazard lights on briefly to confirm which side is out, then turn them OFF.
  • Set your flashlight nearby so you can see the bulb sockets clearly.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the rear tail lamp fasteners

  • Open the liftgate.
  • Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove the two screws along the inside edge of the tail lamp (the edge closest to the liftgate opening).
  • Set the screws somewhere safe so they don’t fall into the bumper area.

Step 2: Pull the tail lamp assembly straight out

  • Grip the tail lamp with both hands and pull it straight rearward (toward you).
  • If it feels stuck, use a plastic trim removal tool to gently help it start moving. (A trim tool is a plastic pry tool that helps release clips without scratching paint.)
  • Tip: Don’t pry on the painted body edge.

Step 3: Remove the turn signal bulb socket

  • Look behind the lamp and find the turn signal socket (usually the larger dual-filament bulb socket in the lamp).
  • Use your flashlight to see the socket tabs clearly.
  • Twist the socket counterclockwise about 1/4 turn by hand, then pull the socket out of the tail lamp.

Step 4: Replace the bulb

  • Put on nitrile gloves.
  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
  • Push the new 3157 type bulb straight into the socket until fully seated.
  • Tip: If the bulb is glass, don’t touch it bare-handed.

Step 5: Reinstall the socket and tail lamp

  • Insert the socket back into the tail lamp and twist clockwise to lock.
  • Line up the tail lamp’s locating pins with the body holes, then push the lamp straight in until it sits flush.
  • Reinstall the two screws using the Phillips #2 screwdriver and snug them evenly.
  • Torque to 2 Nm (18 in-lbs) (snug, not tight).

âś… After Repair

  • Turn the ignition to ON and test the turn signals and hazards on both sides.
  • Confirm the lamp sits flush and doesn’t wiggle (loose lamp = water leak risk).
  • If the new bulb still doesn’t work, re-check that the socket is fully locked and the bulb is fully seated.
