🔧 Highlander - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

This repair replaces the rear turn signal bulbs in your Highlander’s tail lamp assemblies. A failed rear turn signal bulb can cause fast blinking, warning indicators, or poor visibility to other drivers.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 15-30 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF before starting.
  • ⚠️ Keep the smart key away from the vehicle so the hybrid system does not wake up unexpectedly.
  • ⚠️ Bulbs can be hot if the lights were just used. Let them cool before touching the socket area.
  • ⚠️ Do not touch the glass of a new bulb with bare fingers. Skin oil can shorten bulb life.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this bulb replacement.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • Ratchet 1/4-inch drive
  • Trim clip remover
  • Clean nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear turn signal bulb - Qty: 2

Best practice: Replace both rear turn signal bulbs together so brightness and bulb age match side to side.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Highlander on level ground.
  • Shift to Park and set the parking brake.
  • Turn all exterior lights OFF.
  • Open the rear liftgate.
  • Put on clean nitrile gloves before handling the new bulbs.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the Liftgate

  • Use the exterior liftgate handle or key fob button to open the rear liftgate fully.
  • Make sure the liftgate is stable and will not close while you work.

Step 2: Locate the Rear Tail Lamp Fasteners

  • Stand behind your Highlander and look at the inner edge of the tail lamp, next to the liftgate opening.
  • Use a trim clip remover if there are small plastic covers over the lamp fasteners.
  • A trim clip remover is a small pry tool that lifts plastic clips without scratching panels as easily as a screwdriver.

Step 3: Remove the Tail Lamp Bolts

  • Use a 10mm socket and ratchet 1/4-inch drive to remove the tail lamp retaining bolts.
  • Set the bolts somewhere safe so they do not roll away.

Step 4: Pull the Tail Lamp Straight Rearward

  • Hold the tail lamp with both hands.
  • Pull the lamp straight toward the rear of the vehicle to release the locating pins.
  • Do not twist the lamp outward sharply, because the plastic guide pins can break.
  • Pull straight back, not sideways.

Step 5: Remove the Turn Signal Bulb Socket

  • Find the rear turn signal bulb socket on the back of the tail lamp assembly.
  • Use your gloved hand to rotate the socket counterclockwise about one-quarter turn.
  • Pull the socket straight out of the lamp housing.

Step 6: Replace the Bulb

  • Use clean nitrile gloves to pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
  • Push the new rear turn signal bulb straight into the socket until fully seated.
  • If the bulb does not slide in easily, flip it around and try again. Do not force it.

Step 7: Reinstall the Bulb Socket

  • Insert the socket back into the tail lamp housing.
  • Use your gloved hand to rotate the socket clockwise until it locks.
  • Make sure the socket sits flush so water cannot enter the lamp.

Step 8: Test the Turn Signal Before Reinstalling the Lamp

  • Move the smart key back near the vehicle.
  • Turn the ignition ON without starting the hybrid system if possible.
  • Activate the left or right turn signal and confirm the new rear bulb flashes.
  • Turn the ignition OFF again before continuing.
  • If the bulb does not light, remove it with clean nitrile gloves, rotate it, and reinstall it fully.

Step 9: Reinstall the Tail Lamp Assembly

  • Line up the tail lamp guide pins with the body openings.
  • Push the lamp straight forward until fully seated.
  • Use a 10mm socket and ratchet 1/4-inch drive to reinstall the tail lamp bolts.
  • Tighten the bolts snugly by hand pressure only. Do not overtighten plastic lamp mounts.

Step 10: Repeat on the Opposite Side

  • Use the same 10mm socket, ratchet 1/4-inch drive, trim clip remover, and clean nitrile gloves to replace the other rear turn signal bulb.
  • Replace both bulbs even if only one has failed.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Turn on the left turn signal and check the rear left lamp.
  • ✅ Turn on the right turn signal and check the rear right lamp.
  • ✅ Turn on the hazard lights and confirm both rear turn signals flash evenly.
  • ✅ Make sure the tail lamp assemblies sit flush with the body and do not feel loose.
  • ✅ If the turn signal still blinks fast, check the front turn signal bulb on the same side.
