🔧 Altima - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
Replacing the rear turn signal bulbs on your Altima involves removing the trunk-side trim access panels, twisting the bulb socket out of the tail lamp housing, and installing new amber turn signal bulbs. This is a beginner-friendly repair and does not require removing the full tail lamp assembly in most cases.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 15-30 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key/fob from the vehicle before starting.
- ⚠️ Let the bulbs cool if the lights were recently on; bulbs can get hot.
- ⚠️ Do not touch the glass part of a new bulb with bare fingers. Skin oil can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this bulb replacement.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:

📋 Before You Begin
- 🚗 Park your Altima on level ground and shift to Park.
- 🚗 Set the parking brake.
- 💡 Open the trunk fully and remove loose cargo near the rear corners.
- 💡 A trim clip removal tool is a small pry tool used to remove plastic push clips without breaking them.
- 💡 Replace turn signal bulbs in pairs if both are old, so brightness and color match.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the Trunk and Locate the Access Area
- Use the flashlight to look inside the trunk at the rear corner behind the tail lamp.
- Find the carpeted trunk liner or small access flap on the side you are repairing.
- The turn signal bulb socket is mounted behind the outer tail lamp housing.
Step 2: Move the Trunk Liner Out of the Way
- Use the trim clip removal tool to gently pry out any plastic push clips holding the trunk liner.
- If a clip is stubborn, use the 1/4 inch flathead screwdriver carefully under the clip head.
- Pull the trunk liner back just enough to reach the bulb sockets.
- Go slow to avoid breaking clips.
Step 3: Identify the Rear Turn Signal Bulb Socket
- Use the flashlight to identify the turn signal socket behind the tail lamp.
- The rear turn signal is the amber flashing lamp in the outer tail lamp assembly.
- Have a helper briefly switch the hazard lights ON if needed, then switch them OFF before touching the socket.
- Use safety glasses while working near the trunk liner and plastic clips.
Step 4: Remove the Bulb Socket
- Put on nitrile gloves.
- Grip the turn signal bulb socket by hand and rotate it counterclockwise about a quarter turn.
- Pull the socket straight out of the tail lamp housing.
- No socket tool is needed; this socket is hand-turned.
Step 5: Remove the Old Bulb
- Use your nitrile gloves to grip the old bulb.
- Pull the bulb straight out of the socket.
- Do not twist the bulb unless it feels locked; this style normally pulls straight out.
- Wiggle gently, do not force it.
Step 6: Install the New Bulb
- Use your nitrile gloves to handle the new rear turn signal bulb, amber 7440A/7440NA type.
- Push the new bulb straight into the socket until it seats fully.
- Make sure the bulb feels snug and does not wobble.
Step 7: Reinstall the Bulb Socket
- Use your hand to insert the socket back into the tail lamp housing.
- Line up the socket tabs with the openings in the housing.
- Rotate the socket clockwise until it locks in place.
- Do not use pliers; hand-tight is correct for this plastic socket.
Step 8: Test the Turn Signal
- Switch the ignition to ON without starting the engine.
- Turn on the left or right turn signal for the side you repaired.
- Use the flashlight if needed to confirm the new bulb flashes correctly.
- Also test the hazard lights.
Step 9: Reinstall the Trunk Liner
- Use your hands to place the trunk liner back into position.
- Reinstall the plastic push clips by pressing them in by hand.
- If needed, use the trim clip removal tool only to help align the liner, not to force clips in.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Confirm both rear turn signals flash at a normal speed.
- ✅ If the signal still flashes fast, recheck that the bulb is fully seated in the socket.
- ✅ If the new bulb does not light, inspect the socket for corrosion or bent contacts.
- ✅ No scan tool, programming, or infotainment reset is required.
