🔧 Rear Turn Signal Bulbs - Bulb Replacement

Replacing the rear turn signal bulbs on your Sentra is a simple trunk-access job. You’ll remove the rear lamp bulb holder, swap the burned-out bulb, and reinstall everything so the signal works correctly again.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Turn the lights off and remove the key before starting.
  • Let the bulbs cool down before touching them; they can get very hot.
  • Use gloves so skin oil does not shorten bulb life.
  • Be careful not to break the bulb holder or pinch the wiring.
  • If you need to work near the battery, disconnect the negative cable only if you must; this repair usually does not require battery disconnect.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Trim panel removal tool
  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4-inch ratchet
  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear turn signal bulb - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the headlight switch off.
  • Open the trunk and clear out the side storage area so you can reach the lamp access panel.
  • Replace both bulbs if one failed.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the trunk and access the lamp area

  • Open the trunk and go to the side of the lamp you are repairing.
  • Use a trim panel removal tool to gently pull back the side trunk trim or access cover.
  • If your lamp housing is held by a nut, use a 10mm socket and 1/4-inch ratchet to remove it.

Step 2: Remove the bulb holder

  • Reach behind the tail lamp and find the turn signal bulb holder.
  • Use your hand to twist the bulb holder counterclockwise and pull it out.
  • Twist gently; do not force it.

Step 3: Replace the bulb

  • Press the old bulb inward slightly and twist it counterclockwise to remove it from the holder.
  • Install the new bulb by pushing it into the holder and twisting it clockwise until it locks.
  • Make sure the bulb is seated fully and straight.

Step 4: Reinstall the bulb holder

  • Line up the bulb holder with the lamp housing.
  • Push it in and twist it clockwise until it locks.
  • If you removed a retaining nut, reinstall it with the 10mm socket and 1/4-inch ratchet.
  • Torque to 3.9 Nm (35 in-lbs) if a retaining nut was removed.

Step 5: Reassemble the trunk trim

  • Snap the access cover or trunk trim back into place.
  • Make sure nothing is loose or pinched.

Step 6: Test the repair

  • Turn the ignition on.
  • Activate the left and right turn signals one at a time.
  • Check that the rear signal flashes normally and matches the other side.
  • If the bulb does not light, remove it and reinstall it once more.

✅ After Repair

  • Verify both rear turn signals flash at the correct speed.
  • Check the brake lights and tail lights while you are back there.
  • If one side still does not work, inspect the socket for corrosion or damage.
