🔧 Escape - Rear Turn Signal Bulb Replacement

Replacing the rear turn signal bulbs on your Escape is a beginner-friendly repair. The rear lamp assembly needs to be loosened so you can access the bulb socket from behind the tail lamp.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 20-40 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Park on level ground and turn the ignition completely off before starting.
  • ⚠️ Let the rear lamp area cool if the lights were recently on.
  • ⚠️ Do not pry hard on the tail lamp lens; the plastic locating pins can crack.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this bulb replacement.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 8mm socket
  • 1/4-inch drive ratchet
  • Plastic trim removal tool
  • Clean nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Rear amber turn signal bulb - Qty: 1 per side
  • Rear amber turn signal bulbs - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • 📋 Place your Escape in Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • 📋 Turn the headlamp switch and hazard switch off.
  • 📋 Open the liftgate to access the inner edge of the rear tail lamp assembly.
  • 📋 Wear clean nitrile gloves. Skin oil can shorten bulb life, especially on small glass bulbs.
  • 📋 A plastic trim removal tool is a non-metal pry tool that helps release panels without scratching paint.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the Liftgate

  • Use your hands to fully open the liftgate.
  • Stand at the rear corner of the side you are repairing.
  • The tail lamp bolts are on the inner edge of the lamp, visible with the liftgate open.

Step 2: Remove the Tail Lamp Retaining Bolts

  • Use an 8mm socket and 1/4-inch drive ratchet to remove the two tail lamp retaining bolts.
  • Set the bolts somewhere safe so they do not fall into the cargo area.
  • Tip: Use light pressure only.

Step 3: Release the Tail Lamp Assembly

  • Use your hands to pull the tail lamp straight rearward from the body.
  • If it feels stuck, use a plastic trim removal tool carefully between the lamp edge and body to help release the locating pins.
  • Do not twist the lamp sideways. Pulling straight back protects the plastic pins.

Step 4: Locate the Rear Turn Signal Bulb Socket

  • Support the tail lamp with one hand so the wiring is not stretched.
  • Look at the back of the lamp assembly and find the turn signal bulb socket.
  • The turn signal bulb is the amber bulb used for the flashing rear indicator.

Step 5: Remove the Bulb Socket

  • Use your hand to rotate the turn signal bulb socket counterclockwise about a quarter turn.
  • Pull the socket straight out of the lamp housing.
  • A socket is the plastic holder that locks the bulb into the lamp.

Step 6: Replace the Bulb

  • Put on clean nitrile gloves.
  • Use your hand to pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
  • Push the new rear amber turn signal bulb straight into the socket until fully seated.
  • Do not force it. If it does not seat, rotate the bulb and try again.

Step 7: Test the New Bulb Before Reassembly

  • Keep the lamp supported and clear of the body.
  • Turn the ignition to accessory mode using the vehicle controls.
  • Turn on the hazard lights and confirm the new rear turn signal bulb flashes.
  • Turn the hazard lights and ignition back off before continuing.

Step 8: Reinstall the Bulb Socket

  • Use your hand to insert the bulb socket into the lamp housing.
  • Rotate the socket clockwise until it locks in place.
  • Make sure the socket seal sits flat to help keep water out.

Step 9: Reinstall the Tail Lamp Assembly

  • Line up the tail lamp locating pins with the body openings.
  • Use your hands to press the lamp straight forward until it seats evenly.
  • Use the 8mm socket and 1/4-inch drive ratchet to reinstall the two retaining bolts.
  • Torque to snug only; Ford does not publish a high torque value for these lamp screws. Do not overtighten.

Step 10: Final Function Check

  • Use the turn signal stalk to test the repaired side.
  • Use the hazard switch to confirm both rear turn signals flash normally.
  • Close the liftgate once testing is complete.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Confirm the turn signal flashes at normal speed. Fast flashing usually means a bulb is still out or not seated fully.
  • ✅ Check that the tail lamp sits flush with the body and does not wiggle.
  • ✅ After the next rain or car wash, look inside the lamp for moisture. Reseat the socket seal if needed.
